I want to paint my hood black with a purple pearl tint. How would I achieve the whole black/purple pearl effect?

 

get a paint shop to mix it or do 3-stage or possibly 4-stage paint

 

Why should I have to take it to a paint shop to mix it and why do 3-4 stage paint?

dont mean to threadjack, but do you lay down the pearl with the clear? or the pearl and then the clear?

 

base then pearl then clear and just go to a paint store and tell them what you want and they'll mix it for you

 

There are different ways in which you lay pearl, usually you start with a pearl basecoat that is gold, gray or darkgray, afterthat you lay coats of translucent( very transparent) color of choice, after you have achieved the darkness you want ( with the more number of coats the darker) you spray clear.If you want to achieve a dark purple/black, i would first spray the hood metalic purple and then use translucent black on top of it( very little mist it darkens reall fast.

Pear paints are usually three stage buut can be more depending on the kind of result wanted, its just a matter of preference and there is no "official way"

just spray your base. Mix the pearl into some intercoat clear shoot it then shoot the regular clear. DONE

that is entirely false. pearl is not usually mixed into the clear, it is a seperate midcoat. a true 3 stage pearl anyhow.it is a midcoat, 99 percent of the time it is a clear basecoat that your pearl powder is mixed into. you spray it with usually around 3-4 coats before you start to get your pearl effect, depending on how concentrated your pearl is and what color it is being sprayed over. its not usually a contrasted color, it is a color that is going to enhance the underlying color, than you lay your clear after flash time.. Its not like a candy paint where a completely opposite basecoat is sprayed and then covered with tons of opposing color transparent midcoat. i think precision was just giving you a quick easy way of doing it. you can do it like that, just not how its supposed to be done but is good for beginners i guess.

Yea as i had said before there is no official way to spray pearl, it strictly depends on the effect wanted. Impatients way will definately have better results compared to what i posted, i was thinking he wanted a candy like pearl ( in which you spray te metallic base coat, then transluscent color coat with pearl and then clear or clear with a bit of pearl)

 

So this is the way I should do it?
1st. Spray base coat, in his case black
2nd. Spray 3-4 clear coats
already mixed with the pearl powder
in this case purple.
Is this right?

 

well It depends on how much pearl effect you are trying to achieve. You might just need 1 or 2 coats. But after spraying the pearl, you need to spray just straight clear over everything to seal it up and protect the pearl in the case u need to wetsand and buff

I just want it to be noticeable, Like when you're passing by and you take a glance at it and you see some purple tint on that black paint job. So 3 coats will be fine plus the straight clear coat?

I would suggest test panels to get the effect you want before you paint your hood.

 

Should I just get a pice of metal and paint it till Im satisfied with it?

Now I've got something else I wanna do to my hood too.. I want to put some white lettering on it, how should I do this?

Here's what Im thinking of.

 

Yeah get a 8" by 8" peice and paint it with one coat and see what it looks like in the sun and if thats not enough pearl, shoot a second and etc. etc. till you get what you want.
