Default Restoring headlights question

So I've seen the Headlight restoration kits at auto parts stores. From what I can tell they come with sandpaper, a rubbing cloth, and headlight restoration gel or something. Anyone know what that gel is? Cause I've got sandpaper so all I would need is that, then I wouldn't have to buy the kit. Thanks.

most of the "final stage" is just a clearcoat applied witha cloth or a sponge. just sand with 1000 grit and spray with a can of automotive grade clearcoat.
