Default Primer: Eurethane or Epoxy

Please enlighten me here....

I've spent plenty of time researching and I am getting mixed reviews and responses.

Which do you prefer and why?

I don't really care about cost. I just want it done right the first time. To start I am doing my engine bay, then when I am comfortable, I will move on to the outside of the car.

we always follow the simple rule: if its bare metal, use epoxy. if its a job that had a previous coat of base and just is a repaint, use urethane.

urethane will fill a bit better than epoxy. you can spray urethane on top of epoxy, then do some wet sanding before the coats of base. sanding epoxy is not too much fun, a little gummy.

over bare metal, etch prime it then use your epoxy. When used correctly, epoxy primer can keep away corrosion for a long time.

That is a big reason why I liked the sounds of epoxy. Less chances of bleed and it seems to be overall more durable.

There is no reason to use etch primer under epoxy...Actually the only real reason to ever use epoxy is if what your gonna prime has been sandblasted...Otherwise use urethane.

Is it true that epoxy bonds better to bare metal than eurethane?

Yes, epoxy is the correct thing to use over bare metal. As stated, it would probably be easier to spray the urethane primer over the epoxy primer for ease of sanding. In a book I've got, they just spot prime any bare metal areas with the epoxy primer and then they spray the entire thing with urethane.

By the way, I'm glad to hear your jumping into the project! Cant wait to see some pictures.

Thanks, Baker. Your project was actually a good inspiration for myself. Got me motivated to get the bay stripped already. I'll start welding holes this coming weekend and hopefully get some filler on it shortly after.

Epoxy can also be thinned out to make a bomb sealer too.

Funny how I did that on accident one time on a hood for my friends car and man your not lying I have only used two different kinds of ppg primer and I think the epoxy primer used as a sealer worked better than most actual sealers...
