Dear lord, always take everything off. Belt strips, molding, bumpers, headlamps, tail lamps, even glass should be removed when doing an over-all. If you don't R&I all of that you'll get over spray on them (not that big of a deal, but hard to get off plastic sometimes), and your paint will start to peel and flake off where you ended (like at a molding, or at a door handle). In my mind if you want to do it absolutely right, you need to damn near strip the car, do all jambs, R&I doors, trim panels, moldings, weather strips, even panels (fenders, hood, etc...)
Whats "best" can vary on what type of job is being done, custom graphics, quick respray, restorations, ect. If its pretty much all one color, restoration type work, yes it is best to remove parts like that.
thanx guys i thought it was best to remove every thing u can but there's a couple of guys on a local forum that claim to be either in the buisiness or have family in the buisiness and they say its best to leave every thing on the car which i was pretty sure was wrong but i didnt have a strong enough arguement why its wrong

It's basically a quality issue for me. If I were to take my car to a shop and have work done, I want everything R&Ied. If you know what you're looking for, poor paint work sticks out like a sore thumb. We just did a Mustang here that was painted previously at another shop that masked around moldings, handles etc... and the paint was flaking off and peeling at those areas. Sure it'll hold up for a while, but not as long as if it were done right. I also worked for a shop that made us mask everything off and I couldn't stand it (got good at masking though
), I'm just **** about stuff like that I guess.
