CAR WRAPS 101 Post up some good info here please.
I've been looking into the idea of wrapping my car rather than painting it, and so I started to do a bit of research and was surprised at how little I found.
I really don't know what all is involved. Like to know as much as possible.
Lets see some good info:

That's a gold start, nice to see the process.... I'd like to know more though:
Is the vinyl a custom kit for specific body styles and makes?
Can I find a design and order the materials myself and just pay a shop to instal?
General price for labor? For materials?
How durable is it? Lifespan?
Suggested ordering details etc..
Hope to get some good info, thanks in advance

My best friend used to work for a local (to me) company installing vehicle wraps. He did my Jetski amd im also goimg to do my Civic when its time.
Check the places website it will show you how intence it can be and also maybe able to answer a few more questions. Which I can too but its my bed time.

Yes It will last for a long time depending on the ink or dye they use to print the design on the vinyl. as far as the adhesive they use on the back not for sure but it seems to me as long as its really clean when they go to put it on it should stick for the life of the car. Now you would just have to contact the placed that makes them to discuss design and what size you will need. They have programs to determine all of that.

I just wrapped most of my car. Didn't want to paint it, so a friend and I spent a weekend wrapping it. There are many brands and some require you to get it laminated while others don't. I used Oracal brand vinyl. It comes to you laminated. It is guaranteed to last 4 years. You can order however much you want. I ordered 25 feet and it got all but my bumpers and hood done.

Guys at my job didn't know my car was wrapped. I wrapped my car in gloss black vinyl. I don't know how much it would cost to have somebody install it. I did mine with a friend.

If you have some good tech post it, if not, then spectate.

There is a lot of work involved, it is similar to paint but does not cost quite as much. Getting your car wrap is like putting a protective layer over the original paint. I work at vinyl wrap company and most customers love the ability to out crazy designs and accents on their cars. There are places in the Toronto area that can give you more information like Sekanskin and GTA Wraps is also pretty well recognized.
Just google them and some of the websites should show you quotes and pictures of work that has been done.
Some pretty cool stuff!

If the car is older with factory paint and a couple minor dents, would it need to be smoothed out first in order to wrap?

Re: CAR WRAPS 101 Post up some good info here please.
Well if that was the case, the company I work for would take care of it (Sekanskin). However, if the paint is smooth enough it wouldn't be an issue. Wrapping your car is so similar to painting your car that you should think of caring for it in the same way, regular washes and sanding down rust before installing a new wrap.
The beauty of it is if something happens and you get a scratch on the bumper you have the option to replace just that one panel as opposed to re-doing the paint in the whole area.

Re: CAR WRAPS 101 Post up some good info here please.
i work for an advertisement company and we do alot of vinyl installs on busses fleet vehicles ect. and i wrapped mine in 3m controltac cv3 witch is what we use for most vehicles because its easy to work with. i had it laminated forst to give it a matte finish and make it a little more thick... took about 8hrs for my buddy and i to do my rsx and his gti, i had a small rust spot starting on my door so i had to do a little bit of body work so it wouldnt show through, it takes a bit of patience and trial/error to get your technique and using the heat gun down but now thats it done it looks amazing and i couldnt be happier (esp. since i was a pizza and 12 pack deep for labor and material was free from my company)
