Caloric intake, cool too but now the fats the food contains also plays a role. Average caloric intake is what 2000, correct?
I doubt anyone posting in here, including I, consume at most 2000 calories. We all are over that, but with doing it = increasing fat, carbs which eventually leads to weight gain (positive or negative way). I understand working out gets you in shape and burns off some of the calories you took that day but you gotta be careful when you say "increase caloric intake".
I can understand where Migz is coming from, some people lack a certain amount (other a good amount) of protein within a day and can be taking whey protein to make up for that lack.
If you go into a GNC, Vitamin World, Vitamin shoppe, etc they'll tell you some of the proteins they have are either for weight (mass/muscle) increase or lack of protein for those who work out.
I usually eat a protein bar after every work out b/c I know damn well the only time I have protein is @ lunch or dinner and the amount I consume doesnt make it good enough of an amount

my goals are strength training, not size, so i dont care about how swollen my muscles get so i 'look' bigger, so i dont really need to take in any extra protein except from the foods i eat. I eat grilled chicken, tuna and eggs everyday, which is more than enough protein for my goals.
if you want to gain weight but also size, protein is necesary, but i just find it to be overkill.
strength > size.
squats, deadlifts, ohp, bo row, bench > barbell curls, leg curls, calf raises, tricep extensions
