thats pretty much used to cover light from shooting up to blind ppl.. It's a shield.

It actually looks ghetto.. For cars that come with HID kits but no projectors, they use the D2R bulb. It has a shield on the bulb to prevent light from blinding others. And with cars that has projectors, inside the projector, there's a cutoff shield that does the same thing. So the bulb does not need a reflector shield on it. And that bulb is the D2S bulb..look

Left- D2R with the shield
Right- D2s w/ no shield

Those shields are mostly for plug and play applications to not light up the bottom half of the reflector housing so it doesn't blind people.
Still blinding though, if you have a plug and play kit.

Ever looked head on into reflective hid housings? The clear units you will be able to see the internal shield that covers most of the bulb (or you'll see a darker less reflective reflection in the lower half of the housing).... A shield is a shield, weather it's ceramic on the bulb or metal outside the bulb.

And to be clear, those exterior metal shields on the bulb are ONLY used on plug n play kits. Even Casper shields are for installing HID into an H4 application in a plug n play fashion.

If you are using H4 and want to do pnp, please get the bulbs with the shields and those units will be better due to the full covered tip..

those look like some kind of hi/low kit w/ solenoids to change the focal point of the bulbs.
