Default HID Kit Problem

Before you say it, i've looked through countless threads by searching so don't say search.

so the problem is that i installed an h4 5000k BiXenon Hid kit in my 97 civic. worked perfectly for the past 6 months. all of a sudden it is blowing fuses like crazy. when i put a new fuse in only the passenger side light turns on, flickers and dies because the fuse blows, while the drivers side stays unlit.

i have tried switching ballasts and bulbs, even an entirely new harness, but it's always the passenger side that comes on and then dies, and the drivers side never comes on. regular halogens work fine.

what could the problem be?

Have you tried swapping the ballasts around to see if it blows a fuse on the other side when you move it?

it is a bi xenon kit with a harness controller between the power and the ballasts. there is only one wire going to the battery and it has one fuse in it. but yes i've tried switching the ballasts and no matter which ballast is where, the passenger side is always the only one to light

Sounds like a short in your harness controller. Is that a relay harness? I'm not familiar with bi-xenon but I know what it is and I know wiring. Something common btwn both sides is shorting. Did the problem start by itself of were you working on something?

i don't think it's that because i just got a new harness and it is doing exactly the same thing as the old harness

It's gotta be in the wiring. I'm trying to help but I'm missing something. You mentioned that it started after 6 months. Did you do any work on the system at the time this issue started? Blowing fuses is a short or incorrect polarity on a connector.

no after i first put it in i did not touch it till now. before this happened the driver's side wouldn't light the first time i would turn the headlights sometimes, but i attributed that to the cramped conditions in my engine bay on that side. other than that i have not touched it since i installed it

I'm now wondering if the probs are not related. Perhaps the lousy connection on the drivers side is now not working at all keeping that ballast from getting power? Any good with a volt meter and if so, do you get the 12V at the input to the ballast on that side? Sounds like it isn't getting power.

If you disconnect the ballast on the passenger side do you know if the fuse still blows? If so, this would confirm that the connections are messed up.

so yea after some very VERY basic trial and error that i hadn't thought of before, i found that the driver's side ballast didn't work and if both ballasts were connected the fuse would blow. so i just ordered a new ballast and it should be here soon. thanks for the help.
