Default continuity

when checking for continuity, what is considered an acceptable reading?

0 ohms lol

When testing for continuity, you set your multimeter to measure in ohms, and what you're actually testing is resistance.

No continuity is the same as infinite resistance, that is, resistance to current flow. When you set your multimeter to read ohms and just hold the leads up in the air not touching anything, there is no continuity to complete the circuit, and the meter reads infinite ohms.

On my multimeter (older needle-type, not digital), I will set it to read ohms, then touch the 2 leads together so the needle zips over to around 0, and then I use the adjustment **** to get the needle right on 0.

Now different things will have varying levels of resistance, like a spark plug wire will have a higher resistance than a normal electrical wire in the harness that powers a light bulb or something. But even then, as long as it measures something other than infinite resistance, then there is continuity.
