What is this plug? Where does it go? Looked in bay and it was just dangling there

Looks like the intake air temperature sensor. Aftermarket intake installed?

recently bought the car, 2000 civic si with a k20a3. It didn’t have an intake installed, the plug was just hanging there. Is it absolutely required?

Yes, speed density system needs to know the density of the air from temperature and pressure. Ideally that sensor is in the air stream entering the manifold.
