I would check for:

-Any grinding gears especially at higher rpms.
-If any smoke clouds are coming out of the tail pipe when driving.
-Pull off the oil cap and make sure it doesn't look milky.
-Ideally no oil leaks from either the motor or trans.
-Check engine light?

Make sure the engine swap runs fine when test driving.

If hes running a K-pro, make sure it was tuned by someone reputable and get an idea of the map. As stated above, make sure it doesnt grind at all. The a2 had some trans issues in 02-03, mainly shifting from 1-2, 2-3 at high RPM. Depending on where you live, be sure the car will pass the required inspections. Also, get an idea of how the ECU is set up in terms of emissions functions/CEL, and sensors. What works, what is bypassed, etc. If available, run the VIN from the donor vehicle to see if there were any indications of a problem.

Good information above, check all these things, too.
