Default My EF Build Thread

Hi guys, kinda new to this whole build thread thing, so here it goes.

-First let me start off introducing the car, it is a 1991 Honda Civic Si 3 door hatchback (ED7 chassis code), made in Canada, only has 130,000 miles on it, thats pretty low for it being a 91 which is what impressed me the most.

-This car started off sitting in a garage under a cover for the past 8 years from a body shop down the street from my auto shop, they had put the car together around 12 years ago for there son when he was in high school, now keep in mind this is around when I was to young to actually drive and when the first or second fast and furious movie came out and all the body kit stuff was in along with the halo headlights and euro taillights, etc., so I went over to the house where the car was sitting in the garage and uncovered it and first thing I looked for was rust because I do live in Wisconsin and as everyone knows cars up north prone to rust, but as I looked all over the car I dont see any not even on the under side of it which was another shocker, So as I started to look at the car more trying to ignore the fact it had an ugly body kit, an ugly purple strip going down the whole car at an angle, and the ugly 18 inch Motegi wheels, I realized this car had great potential, and was mostly in pretty good condition, even the interior was in pretty good shape with no holes or major tears that I could see.

- So after looking over it in a garage for like 20 minutes, we pushed it outside so I could see what it looked like out in the daylight, it didnt look to bad, now the only question is would the car start and run, as I took a few days to think about do I want this car to be my project car, and the more I saw on the internet how some of these cars can turn out if done up correctly, it had me convinced I wanted that car, so I took a chance on the car not knowing if it ran or not and paid $600 for it, the next day I went over there and swapped out the battery in the car for a brand new Honda Battery, and as I turned the key everything lit up and I cranked the car and it turned over and started right up and I drove it back to the shop with a huge smile on my face knowing I didnt have to pay to have a tow truck come and get it haha

- This was around the end of April beginning of May when I got the car, and I started to get real busy at work, so didnt really have time to work on the car so It just sat inside the shop staring me in the face while I worked on other peoples cars, so finally at the End of May I finally got a chance to work on the car taking off all the bumpers and body panels that I didnt need and would be replacing eventually, so I got to work. As I started taking off the bumpers and taking apart the interior, I saw where the rust had got to, the front and rear bumper supports were rotted out and needed to be replaced, so thank god those parts were still available from Honda so I opted for those, other then that the car was pretty much rust free which I was again happy about.

- As I started taking more and more of the interior apart, I found out that I will need new door panels because they were a bit chewed up (SO FOR ANYONE WHO HAS SI DOOR PANELS PLEASE PM ME OR TEXT 262 496 9321 BECAUSE IM STILL LOOKING FOR THEM), and on the passenger side I took of the rear interior panel, and the rear quarter panel had be replaced, now this always is not a bad thing if done correctly, so I got out of the car and looked down the side of it and it all looked straight...except for the passenger door, it was sticking out about 3 inches or so from the rest of the body, so I walked over to the body shop down the street and asked them why the quarter panel had been replaced and they said the car had been in a minor accident and put a dent in the quarter panel that could not be fixed and smoothed out, so I said ok and as I was about to walk back to my shop, they said "before you go we have the original Si front and rear bumpers if you want them" I said of course, that saved me some money from buying them from Honda and it even still had the Original Si lip on it which was another bonus.

- A few weeks have passed and I finally had more time off to work on the car, I took all the interior out and it needed a really really good cleaning so I worked all weekend to clean the whole interior, So after that I let them dry and started searching on the Internet on how some people have done the interior on their old school cars and I see a lot of plaid, and other choices I thought to myself I really like how Bride seat co. does there gradation on their seats, so the next day I took my rear seats down to Downers Grove, IL to a kid I got ahold of on Craigslist and who works for Mr. Stitch, they do all sorts of custom interior stuff, and upholstery, he also did a custom shift boot in the bride gradation as well which I must say is A++ work, absolutely flawless, I really appreciate what they did and how professional they are, I would highly recommend going to them for all of your custom upholstery needs. So as I think to myself now that I have my rear seats done in Bride Fabric, I need Bride Front seats so I bought a pair of Brand new Bride Vios lll fixed back racing seats, and thats how the interior is coming so far.

- Now onto the Engine, now I'm sure I will get the question why did you choose that motor, and why did you decide to do that?, Well let me explain, the motor in the car is a D16a6 Non-vtec engine, and let me tell you it looked gross inside the engine compartment so I went nuts with Engine De-greaser and Steam cleaner (which is extremely pressurized hot water), and man did that combo cut through the grease like it was nothing, the whole engine bay looked like brand new again just needed a good detailing. After that I decided since I want this car to run like new again I changed everything, Timing belt, water pump, fuel filter, fuel pump, injectors, spark plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor, radiator, all new hoses and I mean all new hoses didnt miss one, new coolant reservoir, new windshield washer reservoir, and cleaned the intake manifold. After all that I also took the head off and replaced the head gasket to check out how th pistons looked and to see if any valves were ruined and everything surprisingly looked pretty clean so I send the head off to get redone and cleaned with new valve seals, and get port and polished, and clearance check and everything checked out alright nothing was damaged, after all this Im thinking to myself, either Im getting really lucky or this kid didn't drive this car much at all back in high school. So as I'm thinking to myself what do I want to do to this motor, NA, Turbo, or something else? Well I found someone here in Wisconsin who had a SOHC D series Jackson Racing supercharger for pretty cheap and had it running in the car and there didn't appear to be anything wrong with it so I jumped at the chance to get it, now some of you may question why did I go with a supercharger? I went with a charger because its different you don't see to many hondas with a supercharger anymore, and also I'm not trying to make tons and tons of power where its almost un-driveable on the street I just want something I can enjoy driving once in awhile and have a little fun with it and thats the way im keeping it, my car, my choice and Im happy with this choice.

-Exterior- I sold all of the body kit parts, head lights, tail lights, subs, and wheels to make some extra cash and surprisingly I got some good money for everything, so now it was time to make a decision on what OEM parts for the exterior to get, I already have bumpers and I am not doing a full SiR front end conversion because everyone does that, I want to be different so I opted for all the exterior pieces to come from the EDM market not the JDM so everything was Euro spec except for the tail lights on the car I got those from a SiR civic but other then that everything else is Euro spec, Single bulb glass headlights, clear corners, Red tailgate center garnish, etc. and everything was in excellent shape shipped from all over Europe.

For now this is what I have and the last picture is now how the car sits in the current state, the car was repainted by a different body shop who does great work and has had cars in magazines, so everything now lines up as it should and the paint is absolutely flawless without the purple stripe, I love it.

I will be updating periodically as I start getting more done but its still winter around here so not much I can do.
