I have a 2003 Honda Civic that had the same issue with starting. Manual trasaxels have a flywheel that has a ring gear around the edge of flywheel. This ring gear separates from flywheel and that's what has happened. When trying to start you are turning that ring gear and not the flywheel or crankshaft due to the seperation.
