Are you talking about the pin in the shift linkage? I use either a 3/8" nut driver drill bit or pan-head 12mm bolt (at least 3" in length) instead of a punch. Works fine for me.
or if your in a pinch, cut the tip off an appropriately sized screwdriver and use that
