What to check before buying an engine!
Here are steps to do while purchasing from an importer.
1)ask for the engines report, there it should state the year, mileage and compression,
have a mechanic check this compression after you buy it to prove the comp stated is true, also check the year on the engine to see it is what the guy claimed it was.
2)do a leakdown test this is much better than a compression test, many engines can have good compression but still have a leak, by doing this test you can pinpoint where it is.
3)check for oil spillage before and after you buy the engine, check for gunk build up by looking in the oil cap from the valve cover.
4)check for cracks in the cv boot, check the teeth on the shaft
5)check the plugs that come with the engine if they look like brand new they probably were changed, and probably
for a reason that the importer hides,if not check plug guides online to see what a healthy engines plugs should look like.
6)check the valve cover if paint is chipping off or the colour has faded a little too much stay away its more than likely that this engine was driven too hard.
7)go the extra mile an pay a little more to get new t-belt,w-pump,drive shafts, clutch, cam seals and maybe mounts as these are the most common failures that can be easily fixed if done before installed in the car(labour for a new clutch was 100 vs 400 t-belt100 vs 400 etc)
8)a full tune up cap&rotor,wires,plugs,pcv,fuel filter,engine flush,oil change,air filter,transmission oil flush,coolant flush.
9)check to see that the distrubitor is good if not have it replaced by the importer than check to see that the fuel pump thats in your old car is capable of feeding whats required for your swap, youll be shocked as most cant!cars with dohc vtec have higher psi f-pumps then non-vtecs
10)once installed go for a quick drive and dont beat on it see if the timing is good that it idles ok and does not misfire,if so check.
11)when through all of this and finally on the road check to see how long it takes for the oil to change colour and what comes out of the oil when changed, brass is still ok between brass and dark brown is when you should change or 3000 miles at the most, if your oil goes bad before 2000miles your either driven to hard or there is something wrong, if metal debris come out when changing your oil take the car to a mech and have it checked!
12)if youve gone through all of the above sell the car to me or kill some vw's and nissan's
good luck!
