Default Weighed Civic before and after H22A swap (pics & info)

(digi-cam sucks, sorry)

Weighed the Civic again. Finally some real comparison numbers for H22 Civic weight.

With the B16, the car had a manual rack, with the H22, a power steering rack & system has been added. This adds ~10 pounds to the car. A/C was/is present at both weighings.

*EDIT* - These weights are with my 150 pound butt in the drivers seat!!

BEFORE:
B16 drivetrain - 1/2 tank gas - 2640 lbs. (2490 w/o driver)

AFTER:
H22 drivetrain - empty tank - 2620 lbs. (2470 w/o driver)

So compared to a B series, the weight penalty is less than half a tank of gas!

Next time someone tells you an H22 Civic doesn't handle, ask them if they've ever actually driven one. Everyone who focuses on the weight issue, it seems, has never actually driven one of these monsters.

It handles just as well as when the old B16 was under the hood. And dang is it fast!

Jeff

good info, Im doing the same swap and that was a big concern for me. How much did you drop you car if at all, and what kind of suspension mods did you do?

i have a tough time believing that. my 99 EX coupe equipped w/B16 weighed 2540 today. the 95 EX coupes were lighter than a 99 coupe. plus me and a fairly strong friend can tackle on a B series motor with slight difficulty. but when the same friend and i tackled on his H22 it was quite a bit more difficult.

true. That is one heavy *** coupe for even having a B16 in it. The stock 99-00 Si weighs a little over 2500 lbs stock. There's no way unless you put sandbags or something else with it for the 93-95 Coupes with a B16 weighing more than the stock 99-00 Si.

The Civic EX in 93-95 weighs 2280 ish lbs. How is it that the B16 put 400 lbs ?

Even 2600 lbs for having an h22 is heavy as hell.

It's not the comparison, but the overall weight I am disputing.

very informal!
its nice to see that someone actually goes out and check it for real.
the only thing I suggest, is weigh it again, somewhere else. compare. for better test results, do a few.
after my swap, im gonna visit like 2-3 places to check weight

my 94 CX stock was 2150 with 1/2 tank , then with h22a went to 2280 with full tank, both were full interior, minus spare

My 94 Civic DX hatch stock weighed probably around 2150 lbs w/ full interior.
Same car w/ complete H22A swap, gutted interior, & 1/4 tank of gas weighed in at 2150 lbs.
I've heard the H22A weighs 185 lbs more than the factory 1.5/1.6. Anyone check?

For clarification, I was sitting in the car both times it was weighed. I weigh 150 pounds . . .

I edited the original post to reflect this as well.

Nice info Jeff

I wish I re-weighed my EG hatchback with the H22 in it. When I had the B20 in the car (turbo kit was not on) and w/out me in the car, it weighted 1821 lbs. Would've been a good comparason to see how it weighed up against a stripped out H22 hatchback. Good info.

yah the wieght issue is not when the car is sitting there its when the car goes around corners. an extra 80lbs in just the front of your car w/ poor suspension can mean disaster. The issue is not the extra wieght to the car but when it corners. **** if your drag racing you want more weight in the front of the cars to prevent wheelspin as bad. But if your going around corners at anykind of speed be careful. I have driven my friends eg hatch w/ a built h23 the thing was rediculous in a staight line but when you have to make a sudden change in direction kind a sucks he almost hit a telphone pole once and he had the best suspension and brakes on the car.

Just to add, it all depends on how your car is setup, and how you drive it. Even with stiff springs up front on my car, going into a turn a high speeds, if I hit the brakes (or if I was going fast enough and just let off the gas) the back end would lock up and want to swing out on me. Even while driving on the highway, I've had to hit the brakes hard a few times to avoid people cutting you off... if you hit it hard enough going fast, the weight transfers forward causing your rear wheels to lock up - when you're going straight it's not a problem. Obviously the best way is know your car's limits and abide by them.
