VSS Problem
The other day my speedometer stopped working and check engine light came on. I checked it....CEL 17 Vehicle speed sensor.
I removed the VSS and open up the top electronic portion of it, cleaned it, inspected it for wear then reassembled and reinstalled the VSS...no luck.
Next i removed the VSS again, this time i replaced the electronic portion, with another one i had (used, but presumed working) and also inspected the the bottom portion, There is no play in the shaft, it spins nicely, and the gear at the end of the shaft also shows no visable wear.
I was hoping that there would be something visably worn/broken to pin point the faulty component,
From what i've read, the electronic portion of the VSS tends to wear out, and replacing it solved the problem.
Is it possible that both parts i tried were bad?
How should i proceed from here, do I look into swapping the whole assembly for a new/known good one?

Here is a pic of an identical VSS for reference:
