California BAR Sticker on a stock motor?
Hi, I might be getting a 1998 civic hatch and I have a few quetions about getting BARed. First off, can I take my 100% stock car in there and get a BAR sticker so it says the motor is a "Honda 1.6L"? If so, could I then after I get the bar just swap in my b16b and I wont get bugged because it is still a "Honda 1.6L" so they wont know what motor I actually got barred. Does California let you get the stock motor barred? Thanks

That's a good question. I'd like to know too!

lol ya call and say what? "Can I get the stock engine BAR certified?" and they would reply "Why do you need it BARed?". "Umm...." Or....could I claim I replaced the engine with different one and swapped the VIN tags on the block?

As long as you have a motor that is the same year as the car and or newer, and you have all the US smog equipment hooked you, you can put any motor in your hatch. Internals must be stock.
examples:
1998 hatch and you put a 1999 JDM B16B.
YOU MUST:
-have all US smog equipment off a 99-00 civic si
-stock B16B head and block and tranny with id #'s on them. They will run the numbers and they will smog the car and do visual as if its a 99-00 civic si but its a JDM motor.
You may also have bolt ons ONLY if they are CAARB approved.
I have BAR'd a few of my cars and its great! You get pulled over and they see a Type R or GSR or Prelude in a hatch and start writing you up and you just laugh at them, wait until they are done, show them the BAR sticker on the car and the cop just rips up the ticket...priceless!
Its a lot of work to make it pass the BAR/Smog...but it can be done.
just make sure you have ALL USDM parts except for the head, block and tranny. Must have a USDM ecu too.
GOOD LUCK!

State Referee told me that they will look at the engine bay and motor as if its a B16 in a 99-00 si. That means you have a B16B head and bloack and all other equipment in the engine bay is routed as if you are looking in a 99-00 civic so engine bay and using a USDM ECU.
just what I was told by the Ref's themselves when I BAR'd my cars

I believe that all the refs say different things.

that won't work since the BAR sticker will say SOHC 1.6 on it. the majority of BAR approved cars I've seen with a b-series swap will say DOHC 1.6 or 1.8 so basically you won't fool the refs on this one.

Re: California BAR Sticker on a stock motor?
the b16b was not offered in the u.s. so that makes it NOT legit
as for the b20 in an integra you CANT get it barred
since im so nice here you go...

Re: California BAR Sticker on a stock motor? (Hoodwinked)
Talk to your local BAR Referee, if they are up to date with their info the B20 are a direct replacement motor for 94-01 DC(X) chassis, which means no need to be BAR'd; again, if they are up to date with their info which means it varies from person to person.
But, for a fact smog techs are not up to date or informed with any new news from the state, so don't be surprised to be sent to the ref if you have a B20 motor in a DC(X).

last time i checked (feb 2011) a b20 is still a truck motor and CANNOT swap into a car chassis legally
