Troubleshooting: B18C5 Swap questions
I have a B18c5 swap in my 99 GSR chassis. engine ran until started doing long cranks with bouncy idles. i cleaned out the iacv, replaced spark plugs, wires, dizzy cap + rotor, and fuel filter. now it starts but shuts off right away. I need some advice

Yes it does from an 02 sensor for bank 2 of 2. got it replaced. still has the code. I'll get the engine scanned tomorrow.
Ill try to keep this thread updated, been very busy this whole month.

CEL code shows P0744 - Torque converter clutch solenoid circuit intermittent.
I also replaced the PCV, hoses and gaskets yesterday...
So far, I have to crank the engine couple of tries for it to hold an idle. On the first try, the engine turns then dies right away. 2 or more times after it holds the idle. From there it the RPM gradually rises from .7 rpm to 1.7 rpm the highest..

That is the outside sticker of the ecu case. This obviously can be replaced or the inside board could be replaced. Take some details of any labeling inside the ecu and one detailed pic of the ecu board.

one other thought..... P0744 - suggesting a scan tool, P73-023 is a JDM ECU.... ie not USDM OBDII scan tool compliant, it will not even respond to the request.
I would not break the warranty sticker until you check how the scan was done.
use the jumper method (just like OBD1) and pull the codes.

Re: Troubleshooting: B18C5 Swap questions
I've never seen a warranty sticker on a ecu in 16 years of working on these cars. Likely from the shop that swapped the engine in your car. Pull the codes like relic suggested and if you do not get anywhere, remove the sticker and open it up and post pictures.
However, this is all unrelated to the original point of supposedly the engine was running fine and then long cranks to start. Verify mechanical timing, make sure the plugs are not fuel saturated, bouncy idle to some means the tachometer wants to jump all over, to others it may mean the engine is stumbling then cuts off. Define this.

I have to start it a few times to hold an idle.
at cold start it holds at .6 - .8 rpm and when it gets warm, idle holds around 1.5 rpm

Re: Troubleshooting: B18C5 Swap questions
JDM ecu will not communicate with a obd2 tool. Half the box says rs 99 . Something is suspect there and the warranty label doesn't even have the company name who has the warranty. O.P can you give us more details on how you got code ? Did the problem just appear after a swap or was it running fine? Do you actually have a warranty for your ecu ? I wouldn't buy one as of lately without opening them up.
I will have the to check the code using the jumper method. had it scanned at autozone but read Error. took it to the cashier and plugged it in his computer and read the code p0744. the vehicle was running fine before..

Re: Troubleshooting: B18C5 Swap questions
You can't pull codes from JDM ecu's using a scan tool. Just because someone wrote on there with marker the ecu is for B18C R, 99' doesn't mean that's really whats inside the case.

Re: Troubleshooting: B18C5 Swap questions
Engine Coolant Temp error (ECT). More than likely a wiring issue but the sensor is located on the side of the head below the distributor. It's 2 pin connector.
Have you tried to start the car recently, with the same exact issue as original? Starts then stumbles then shuts off?

Checked the wiring... loose connection. cleaned it up and re wired. rpm idle dropped from 1.7 rpm to .9 rpm idle. CEL went away but came back again with CEL code 14 for IACV. I tried cleaning IACV recently. might be time for a new one??
it was a 1 pin plug btw...
