Trashed gears.
hi fellas
lately my 3rd and 5th gear grind if i shift at a RPM that's higher than 4K. so i try changing the tranny oil and see if that helps.
i was shocked to see my old "fluid" is black oil mixed with water like clear fluid.. yuck.
i guess my synchrons are trashed. i have 2 options:
buy a set of replacement gears and get an aftermarket LSD (like quaife)
OR
buy a TypeR tranny with HLSD.
which one is the better route? right now i have a B18C1 mated to a CSI tranny. i may have about 1500 to spend.
thanks in advance.

shifting below 4K in 3rd gear sucks.

Re: Trashed gears. (Spaceman Spiff)
i would look into getting the new trans...once those synchro's start to go other problems will come later. also, replacing the synchro's can be very expensive for both parts and labor...most transmission shops charge about $400 to change a synchro when you bring them the trans out of the car (believe me i have called around) and all the parts for the synchro's become quite expensive too. just get a different trans...it will be the easiest and most cost effective solution

Re: Trashed gears. (court)
please explain further court.
the shift linkage is off an integra. shifting at low RPMs is A-OK. only at high RPMs when i get the grindings.
here's my finding after 2 days of constant shifting:
it grinds when i shift into 3rd at high RPM
it grinds when i shift into 5th at high RPM
at LOW RPMs, shifting from 2nd gear straight to 5th, it grinds
shifting from 3rd gear straight to 5th, it grinds.
normal daily driving, no problem.
thanks for replying court. hope to hear another input from you.

Re: Trashed gears. (hatchmobile)
I agree with hatchmobile. You're going to pay a grip for labor to have someone replace syncros. If possible, go to a junkyard and find a used transmission, and do it yourself. It'll be cheaper in the long run.

Re: Trashed gears. (Spaceman Spiff)
if you let the rpm's drop first then shift into 3rd does it still grind??? i just went though this exact same problem and i rebuilt the trans because my synchro's were fucked
btw...what type of fluid are you running??? the best stuff out there is the redline mt-90...shifts like butter

Re: Trashed gears. (hatchmobile)
if you have grinding in thoose upper shift gears (1/3/5) then there is most likely a linkage/bushing/ clutch problem. perhaps a mater cylinder, but most likely a bad linkage. im not saying that the **** isnt bad, im pointing out mechanical faults to attend to.

Re: Trashed gears. (hatchmobile)
honda trannys use MT90? NO WAY! you must be joking...
i use MT90 for my nissan's tranny. it says so in the FSM, so i used it.
but according to the FSM for honda, i'm suppose to use motor oil, 10-30 or 10-40. is that wrong? is that why my tranny grinds?
i just recently changed some new oil inside, per FSM, i used 10-30. the grinding is less. it's a little smoother. but not that much improvement. however, grinding did decrease.
by the way, if i drop the RPM first and then put into gear, i can decrease the probability of grinding, but that's not always the case.
please let me know if i should change out the "motor oil". i always go according to the FSM.. but i guess the FSM is wrong...

i just recently changed out the MC due to leakage into the cabin. i bleed everything and everything is good. the grinding started before the MC leaks.. so i doubt it's the MC.
thanks for the reply court. i'm trying to figure out all the easy fixes before i take everything apart and spend big $.

Re: Trashed gears. (Spaceman Spiff)
i have always been told that mt-90 is the best fluid by quite a few master honda certified techs and by bunch of local shops...i don't know where you heard not to use it. it is the best fluid that i have ever used. and i think i will continue using it.

inside the Honda FSM, it says it requires 10-30 to 10-40 type oil. i just don't want to "overkill" by adding Redline fluid into the tranny.
where you get cheap MT90 by the way? the cheapest i got is $8 per quart at a local domestic performance shop. summit racing ripped me off once asking for $11.
dus
doing every little thing i can to save my gears.

Re: Trashed gears. (Spaceman Spiff)
i got mt-90 from a shop by me for $6.50 a bottle...i can get it cheaper than that, but i have to talk to my friend (like $4-5 a bottle). it's definately the best stuff i've ever used, a lot better than synchro shift and all that...very smooth

Re: Trashed gears. (hatchmobile)
You should always use Honda MTL (manual transmission lubricant) in your Honda tranny. If you decide to change your tranny, let me know, as I would take the old one off your hands. I'm always looking for some spare parts.

Re: Trashed gears. (Jaker)
Jaker...do you want to buy a disassemblied y21 transmission. it has a bad 4th gear and the synchro's are a little worn. let me know...i can also put it together if you want
