Default Should I need a Main Girdle?

I have a 92 B18A block with a B18B head. I have a .030" Cometic head gasket and Wiseco K541M81 pistons(8.3:1 CR). Crower cams, valve springs, and retainers. I will be revving to 9000 RPM and boosting between 15-20 PSI. Should I install a girdle?

How much better is a 5-cap girdle than a 3-cap?

Pick up a girdle, you'll be much happier in the long run. Get a used Type-R or GSR with their main caps, plastigauge the **** out of it. And do whatever machining that needs to be done. Been working on my boosted LS VTEC for 3 years now....

What do you mean in the long run? I mean, has anyone ever heard of warping or whatever girdles are supposed to protect the block from, ever happening? Especially in the 300-350 HP range.

I guess what I'm saying is, what is the worst that could happen if I did not use a girdle?

Well the long run means exactly what it is, the LONG RUN... the opposite of the short run, for extended duration, prolonged period etc....

The gidle reduces flex in the block under higher levels of stress, and physically stiffens the crank journals but connecting them together reducing again the flex.

The type-r 98+ I believe even has a cast aluminium stiffener as the flywheel cover for the tranny instead of the two braces and piece of tin found on GSR's and B16's. And the new K's have cast aluminium oil pans to aid in bottom end stiffening.

Tolerances are very important when building a motor with high output, that is why keeping them is so important. Heat and stress with time will alter the shape of you block, these braces will aid in keeping it from doing so. It may be small differences but still measurable. Heads and blocks require redecking and machining from time to time, think about it....it's your investment
