Default Pistons are back from SwainTech

A little eye candy for you guys.

Just got the pistons back from Swain Technologies. They did the PolyMoly coating on the piston skirts. For those who don't know, the moly coating reduces the coefficent of friction between the piston skirts and cylinder walls (less friction=less heat). You can feel the difference just by dragging your finger across the two surfaces. They are OS Type S pistons, btw . . .

It was about $80 after shipping both ways. Top notch company, I highly reccomend them to anyone who is building an engine. Ok the good stuff:

The rods are on order, and as soon as those come in everything goes to the machine shop :-)

Enjoy!
Jeff

Looks sweet but why didn't you coat the tops with their ceramic coating?

I have the tops and sides of my pistons done...gold coat and PC-9...sitting in the freezer waiting for me to put them in. If you get the gold coat you need to keep them from getting in contact with humidity or the coating gets icky. Have any engine balancing/boring work done before you send in anything to get gold coated, or else just leave them in the freezer like me. I'll take pics when I get home in a week.

You realize a freezer is a humid environment right?

Really? How do you figure?
I thought that the compressor used for refrigeration removes all humidity in conjuction w/ the dryer, providing a cold environment.

They told me to put them in sealed bags in the freezer but I was under the impression that pretty much any moisture in a freezer would freeze making it a relatively dry environment.

Yup...little bit of condensation...as long as the tops don't turn nasty and green everything is just fine, according the Swain. They'll be going from the freezer to the engine to starting up (which finishes the goldcoat cure) in a matter of hours so they'll be just fine.
I work on my car in Rochester...so Swain is pretty close to me as well.

I need to bring this topic back from the dead to ask an important question.

How does skirt coating affect piston to wall clearance? CP calls for .0035" clearance. Right now my pistons are 3.3060" with the PC-9 coating and my bores are 3.3085" leaving me with only .0025" piston to wall clearance instead of the recommended .0035".

Will .0025" be enough to run on a high boost car? If not, I can open up the bores another thousandths but then what happends if/when the skirt coating wears off? Then my clearance will be too much. The coating is approx .001" thick on each side.

Someone also suggested with the gold coat thermal coating my pistons recieved, they may not heat up and expand as much. Meaning they will not need as much piston to wall clearance.
