a while back in HOT ROD, they had an article about Do it yourself piston coatings. they tested them, etc, and the coated cast pistons withstood heat from a torch for 3x as long. the same company also made a DIY skirt coating that supposedly works well. has anyone done this yet? i'll post the contact info for the coatings next time i see the magazine.

i'm going to be building an engine with vitara pistons i just bought from FJT and some eagle rods i have yet to buy. just curious as to what peoples opinions of this would be for a small, well tuned turbocharged engine.

I have been wondering the same thing, I will be using Vitara pistons in my car as well... I was going to look into having someone else coat them but it's pretty expensive... If the DIY coating works count me in!

i think i'm going to be ordering the thermal barrier coating stuff.........i'll try it out. cant really hurt i guess.

I am still thinking about either coating my pistons myself or getting them coated...

The DIY coating doesn't look that hard and is pretty inexpensive, but I'm hesitant to be the first to do it!

Perhaps you could also use the coating to close up some of the piston to wall clearance and fit the pistons a little 'tighter' in the cylinders, since they are a little loose they way they are from what I hear.

I use techline coatings. Read all the application info on their site and follow it exactly andyou wont have any troube with it. Most important thing is the prep work, so make it clean, clean, clean.

I coated the vitaras in my d16a6 build with techline cbc1 and dfl1 along with the valves, combustion chambers, and exhaust ports.

Blasting with aluminum oxide media is a must. The coating will flake otherwise. Pandahatch shot the stuff for me and we baked the components in his parents oven(don't tell Jerry).

I don't have results yet, but I'm getting close...

i actually never used the vitaras..i bought SRPs instead.

i just had those coated at LOKO in chicago, in prep for a re-build on that engine

I bought all the coating stuff and plan on trying in the next week. I'll post in the process and results with lots of pics in the tech/misc section. Right now my workshop looks like a bomb went off in it and I need to do a major excavation so I can have a place to get the oven set up for this.

I've used several of the techline coatings for years and have never had any problems with them. Just think of it like painting - prep work is everything.

What do you do to prep pistons, rods, and bearings for coating? I really don't want to sandblast them like I do for exhausts. I just can't see sandblasted rod bearings ever being a good thing. I'm thinking Scotch Brite and brake cleaner, but this will be my first attempt at doing bearings, rods, and piston skirts/tops, so I'm not sure.

i thought i coatings were just for pistons, not really for bearings...

Ceramic thermal barrier coating for the piston tops, dry film lubricant for the skirts and bearings. The dry film lubricant is supposed to help prevent scuffing in the event of a temporary loss of oil.

sorry random question here, did you guys use the oem vitara pistons from the suzuki dealership or the aftermarket replacemnt pistons for the suzuki vitara? someone on another thread said the aftermarket were the ones to get
