Nseries engine in hatch
Would be an import, US never got the diesel.
With the way CA is going they will probably impound your freshly swapped diesel in the next 3-24 months. Because you know diesel is the devil's fuel.

First step toward feasibility would be to figure out what trans you can bolt it up to. L series? R series? They're mostly the same these days so it's likely it could be as easy as a bolt up or a clutch housing swap.
What are you going to do about the fuel system? ECU? You're not going to be Flash-Pro'ing that swap. Standalones that support diesel and/or direct injection are prohibitively expensive still. MoTec, GEMS, etc.

N22B2 comes with a 6 speed manual. The hardest thing I was thinking would be the custom axles and the motor mounts.

It is possible. Get a whole car and swap EVERYTHING. The bigger challenge will be taking the newer CAN bus PCM and integrating it to an old analog car. For gauges and AC and any other accessory item.
It can be done, just a matter of time, effort, and money. Takes a LONG time to recover even $600 doing an engine swap from 30mpg to 40mpg.
