If compression is OK-> not head gasket. Plus you'd have nice plume of white smoke. Been there.
Overheating- cooling system - Did the fan come on? Are you getting a CEL? I'm hoping the water pump is running.
Try this:
1. Let the car cool down, like for an hour.
2. Open the radiator cap (make sure it's filled)
3. Make sure the heating seting is on full "heat"
4. start the car and let it idle. After about 2 minutes, you should be able to "feel" the lower radiator hose getting hotter (t-stat opens) and start to see flow through the radiator.
5. the fan shold kick on
If it failed to do any of these, you'd know where to look.
I'd check to make sure the fan switch is plugged in, it's different from the coolant temp sensor (It's right next to the t-stat) and that it works (try shoring it out to turn the fan on, etc)
