Default MINI ME SWAP

I HAVE A 1996 4 DOOR CIVIC AND I WANT TO DO A MINI ME SWAP WHAT HEAD WOULD BE THE BEST TO USE AND WANT AND IF ANY THING ELSE I WOULD NEED TO DO TO IT. WILL I HAVE TO PUT VTEC INTAKE MANI AND THROTTLE BODY ON IT TOO?

A D16Y8 head would be best for you. You will need the VTEC distributor and ecu at the very least. The intake manifold and throttle body would be preferred. Do a search on this site, you will find lots of info on this topic. BTW, turn off yours caps lock.

I'm personally a fan of using the D16Z6 head over the D16Y8 head. As stated, you'll need the dizzy and ECU, the intake mani and throttle body are optional but recommended. Also don't forget to invest in a new headgasket, timing belt, and tensioner.

If you use a Y8 head you can reuse the Y7 distributor no problem. Using the Z6 head will require a Z6 distributor then you must repin the wires with an OBD2 plug.

I wasn't sure if there was a difference between the Y8 and Y7 distributor. I'll add that to my knowledge bank.

My thoughts on the mini-me: I did it. Waste of my time. I mean it only took me an hour and a half, but still that was cutting WAY too far into beer time. It wasn't any faster really. You need the tranny to make it worth while, and by the time you get there, you probably could have bought a complete z6/y8 swap. Ugh. I don't see why h-t people are so in love with this pos.

I noticed a pretty decent gain with my mini me. I had the complete top end, and tranny. It's worth it if you like wrenching and can pick the parts up cheap.

If you were to use a z6 head on a y7 block, what ECU do you need to use? Can you use a OBDII or do you need to use a OBDI and get a II-I harness? And I've heard that the z6 would give you more hp because it will raise the c.r.. Is this true? Thanks guys.

The Y8 head has a somewhat "squared" and therefore smaller combustion chamber so it will yield slightly higher compression than the Z6 head.

I do. The B7/Z6 combo compared to stock Z6 longblock has a better rod stroke ratio as well as a compression ratio that is nearly a point higher. Of course a mini-me with a DX transmission is going to be much shittier than a full Z6 because of the much better Z6 transmisison. I have the Z6 transmission on mine, so I am kind of biased. I did manage to pull out a 15.9 with the B7/Z6 mini me w/ the DX trans which in a 2300 lb 4-door IMHO is extremely impressive.

I did my mini me in two stages. I got the tranny first and put that in, then did the mini me. I noticed majority of the gain from just using the tranny. If you still have the dx tranny when you do the mini me you will probably not notice much. I used the y8 timing belt. The block is the same, exterior wise anyway. I think the ex runs different pistons, but I used my y7 pistons. Only the top end is different.

You are going to need:
knock sensor
head
complete IM (96-98 don't have air injection holes at the end of the runners. 99+ have air injection holes. If you get a 96-98 head, get a 96-98 IM so you don't get air leaks from the IM air holes) and IM gasket

exhaust manifold and gasket
new head bolts(y8) - not supposed to re-use head bolts
head gasket (y8)
92-95 ex/si tranny or 96+ ex tranny

preferably a ex harness if you are no good at wiring, or plan to do another swap. I am using the ex harness on my itr swap.

You won't have to worry about the oil control orafice removal if you go with the y7/y8 combo.

Most of the parts are probably interchangable but this is what I used. Also, you might get a code 91 when you do the swap. Search for "code 91" and one of the links tells you how to fix it. If you need anything else send me a message.

couple other people i talked to on other sites, said that it didn;t matter what im i used or timing or water pump i used it would all bolt up.i also work at advanced auto parts is it a good idea to get a used head or get a rebuilt head from work.
on the harness i was told i could use the harness just hack a vtec controller,or swap ecu i just want to get all the info i can before i finish so i know its done right the first time thanks-beejay
