LS Vtec Question?

Default LS Vtec Question?

ok how hard is it to build a ls vtec.....im talkin with my friend how it would be smarter to make his LS b18 a ls vtec with a b16a2 head becuz its lower compression ratio and just as equal hp to the b18c5..so how does this work i understand putting the b16a2 head on the ls block....how hard is it to do.....is it a direct install is there any modifications that are needed...? pistons? rod? cams? how does this work...im thinkin aobut how it can't be too tough to do this upgrade becuz i was just working on my friends supra we just put the head on his car.. how many mods are needed for this todo it on your own?

Not all that hard, some machining needs to be done. check out http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto/lsvtec/lsvtec.php they have some generic info on the swap. A good ls/vtec setup can cost way more than a complete b18c5 motor, yet it all depends on how good you shop around. Considering you already have the bottom end, id do a rebuild w/ all new bearings to boot, slap some jdm itr pistons in there. Then do a little valvetrain work, valve job, springs, retainers, and seals, which all depends on how good the head you purchased is...You can even pick up some used heads on ebay that have already been set-up for ls/vtecs, i think i saw a b18c1 go yesteray for around 800 bucks, but you'd be able to get yourself a b16 head a few c notes cheaper. Just remember though a ls/vtec isnt as reliable as a b18c5 unless its built right...if you dont want to deal with the hassle of a ls/vtec pick up a long block b18c5 from jdmpassword i believe has'em for like 2600.
