i just wanted to know if a jdm b16a or b18c1 are smog and carb legal in califorina and if they are not is there a way to make them? thanks in advance

The only way to pass a jdm engine would be to install 2 or 3 cats onto the car. The emissions regulations in japan are that different, plus its an old abused motor.

A good majority of the engines that come from japan are under 40k miles. They're much more strict on emissions over there. But then agian, they probably beat on the engine while it's still under 40k miles. I think in cali, make sure the engine is newer than the car, and don't forget to wire up the evap solenoid and stuff. That helps with emissions a good deal.

how certain are you about that? becuz i dont want to waste all that money and all the time and find out it wont pass the smog

you should do a search because it has been really talked about on alot of the boards. but here's a quick run down from a Ca smog ref I talked to

Motor must be an equivalent motor to a USDM motor. example JDM B18c1 is ok because the same motor was sold here.

USDM ECU and all smog sensors have to be used for the corresponding motor

Motor has to be wired the same as the USDM motor- 94-95 OBD1 / 96^ OBD2

NO B16A1's cuz they were never sold here in a USDM car.

your actually wrong about that. The civic del sol VTEC came with a B16. What you can do is find a chipped P28 or USDM P30 to convert to OBD1 and have all required sensors and exhaust then have a refere and you should be able to pass

actually I'm right. I meant no B16a1 motors, there were never sold here. A b16a3 on the other hand was since like you said there were in the Del Sol's and the Civic Si's.

Also unless you get a really lazy Smog Ref which I doubt. You need to run the CORRESPONDING ECU to the same motor. Meaning no P28's

This is INFO I got directly from a SMOG REF in order to pass and get that nice BAR sticker.

I was talking about converting to OBD1 using a 1st gen B16 using a P30 or a P28.

JDM ITR motor will not pass CA smog? My car is 2000 EK and JDM ITR 99 motor... I will get more difficulty to get pass the smog. How I can pass the smog?

Get another motor, from a 00-01 Integra. Other than that, good luck.

Like I said above install 3 cats to lower the emissions. As long as its not a Test Only center in CA the smog people won't say anything about the motor in there. You just need the computer to think its smog legal.

Yeah 3 cats to lower the emissions on the car. Install cat after cat after cat, its not that hard. That is what a customer at Dohc Garage had to do inorder to pass his test.

I had a budy passing a h22 in a 92 eg and all he did was get all the smog legal bolt on crap, cat, 2.5 pipeing, some kind of muffler, usdm ecu, and his motor is newer then his car.

You can research the matter for yourself, here is the info, have fun sifting through it all. But yes, replacement engines from Japan are perfectly legal, as long as they are from the same emissions teir, and conform to US smog regulations.
