I have a JDM B16a engine from an 89 civic sir, turbo'd, and am having an overheating issue, which seems like the thermostat. after running the car fairly hard for a lil while, the temp maxes out past the red on my dash, and then after driving a lil while, drops all the way back down after a few seconds. I cant think of annything else that would cause this to happen other than a sticking thermostat. I was hoping someone could tell me what thermostat that I can get here in the states that will work with this JDM engine? Is there another american civic motor that uses the same thermostat? also, would it hurt to get a low temp thermostat? Please let me know, thanks!

you drive it when its above red? your gonna warp your head easily too, check to see if the fan comes on first..

no i do not drive it like that, maybe I wasnt specific enough. I just bought the car, and I noticed it one time and have not driven it since.

My question still remains... I need to know if there is an american honda motor that uses the same thermostat that I can get at a parts store, anyone?

oh! and are any of the trannys u named LSD trannies? do they have a tranny with limited slip that will bolt up to my engine?

anyway, any b-series thermostat will work, so 99-00 si, 94-01 gsr, etc.

you should test the thermostat in a pot of boiling water with a cooking thermometer...

if the thermostat opens at 180 degrees, then it's ok and you have to look elsewhere for the problem. does it lose coolant? are you sure the fans are coming on? are there bubbles in the overflow reservoir?

lol oops, sorry bout the lsd comment, wrong thread. Thanks a ton for the info, and I am pretty sure there are no leaks. I am also pretty sure that the fans are coming on, because I can hear them on most of the time. I am not sure about the bubbles, I was told by someone to check to make sure there is coolant getting into the block, and that theres a bleed valve near the top of the engine and to open it slightly and rev the engine a lil til i see water come out of the valve, and then ill know the block has coolant. I was also told that the reason im probably overheating is because I have an aftermarket radiator which is very small, due to the way they routed the intercooler and wastegate piping. Its about half the size of a normal radiator. Hoping I can get a second opinion on that actually...

get a mugen fan switch. it turns on b4 the engine gets too hot.
get a orginal equipment thermostat for a 95 del sol dohc vtec from honda, either local or online.

so are you saying that my small radiator should be efficient or will i need to upgrade it?
