Internal vrs external coil

Internal vrs external coil
I was just thinking today, what are the advanteges of having a internal coil distributor? It seems to me external coil has many more advanteges, so why does the usdm h22 have external coil and the jdm internal? to me it just seems kinda strange... any info why would be great
