Default How hard is it to take off the head while the motor is in the car?

I am not a mechanic, but I am not stupid. I have lots of books and hours of watching and working on my car, but I have never taken the head off while the motor was in the car. How hard or should I say how easy is it to do? Are there any tricks to do it better or faster or easier? What should I watch out for? Hoses, connectors?

Well not sure what car you have or what motor, but it isn't to difficult to take off your motor's head while it is still in the car. Basically, starting off, make sure the motor has cooled, drain out the radiator, unhook all hoses going to the head starting of with the hose from the valve cover to intake and ending with upper radiator hose. Take the spark plug wires and take off the valve cover and upper timing belt cover, loosen the tensioner pulley and take the t/belt off the cam gear(s). Start removing sensors (remember where the go) that lead into the head right above the tranny and remove the distributor and connectors that are clipped onto those little brackets. Unbolt the exhaust manifold and intake manifold (which might be the biggest pain in the rear). Recheck to make sure all wiring to the head and hoses are clear and just becareful lifting it out. Maybe have a friend near by. Hope that little helps

its a lot quicker if you leave the intake manifold bolted to the head and take everything out, then once its all out, then you can unbolt the intake from the head

dont forget the bracket which holds the intake manifold to the block, just take it off and leave it off
