a z6 isnt a very big performance motor. the vtec engages at 4400~ and well.. you dont feel it.
i never felt it with my civic ex. once i put my b16 in, then you hear/feel it.

ok. but why would i feel an increase at like 6K ?
But you "should" be able to hear a distinct change in sound level at the VTEC activation point. (someone said 4400 rpms) What other mods do you have on it again? With an intake, you should be able to hear it more clearly.

If Vtec is working, your redline will be higher. I forget what a SOHC motor redlines at.
If it isn't working then the motor willl redline the same as the DX motor.

vtec has nothing to do with redline or rev limit.

Re: how can i tell if Vtec is working? (Kamin)
to my understanding...you're both wrong. sohc vtec motors do rev about 1000 rpm higher than non vtec sohcs,so it does effect redline... but i think that you are also correct that in the case of it working or not working on an already vtec motor, will not affect the redline. Best thing i can tell ya is that if you don't feel it at all, then it's probly not working...as for the pull at 6 grand, maybe those bolt on mods you named are doin something for ya.

vtec dosent affect redline.
they are diffrent motors, with diffrent redlines. and diffrent ecus.
wether vtec is working or not dosent affect how high it will rev.

Kamin, you are wrong.
I know for a fact that when Vtec isn't working, the redline is lowered. I had that problem on my B16a swap in an EF and when the codes were cleared, the Vtec worked, the redline was higher.

no i am not
i ran without vtec for 2 months on my b16 and no codes. still revved to 8300.
your revlimit was lower because your ecu was in limp mode from a code you were throwing.
i am NOT wrong about this. i know for 100% fact.
dont belive me?
go unplug your vtec solenid and run to 8000. i will bet you 25,000$ it will make it.
certan sensors not working will put the ecu into limp mode, MAP, CKP, etc. wich will then run the car with base fuel maps, no vtec and a 6000~ rev limit so you dont damage the motor.
vtec not working will NOT AFFECT THE REV LIMIT.

when i had my d16z6, i could NOT feel or 'hear' the vtec engagement...if you have no CEL, you should be all fine......

My buddy of mine hooke up one of those srewdriver things that light up when they get power.Hook that up to the vtec solenoid and either rev it up or drive it and see if it lights up.I hope that helps.

This is really funny. I can't believe that some people call rev limit REDLINE.
The term REDLINE comes from the tachometer, where racers of old used to mark their tach face with a simple red line to know where their threshold of RPM was. Anything past this was to assume damage.
REV LIMIT is an electronic (or mechanical) means of limiting the actual maximum RPM. I have seen many, if not all cars hit rev limit AFTER red line.
FYI: did you know that before they had shift lights, old school racers made yellow lines on their tach faces to know when to shift? My father told me that was what it was for when I asked him as a child. He had a tachometer that was CABLE DRIVEN, and said in those days it was really popular to mark their shift points in multiple colors, for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. If you had a 4th line on your tach, then you were either low geared, of top dog on the block.
Please, can we stop calling everything red line? I mean it is like calling Nitrous Oxide NAWSS. NOS is a Brand. Not the oxidizer itself. Like calling all gasoline EXXON. Calling all shoes NIKES... HAHA
Ok I am finished now...

I know the diffrence between rev limit and redline but for simplicity ill talk the way they do.
like calling all 92-95 civics EG's.
