H22A to Civic EK, OBD1 or OBD2? HELP
Ok…I’m planning an H2B build in my ‘98 Civic Coupe EX (EK). I haven’t purchased anything yet, I want to have the whole thing planned out as best as possible first. I’ve considered all H/F engines (H22, H23, F20B, etc.), they all have pros/cons and tradeoff’s which I’ve done my best to weigh. With this being my first swap/build I’ve narrowed my choice down to the JDM H22A, mainly because there is a lot of info out there on them and parts are very accessible. I haven’t decided on the trans yet, I like what I’m reading about the ITR trans plus LS 5th. My real question however involves the H22A and whether I should get the 92-95 H22A OBD1 or the 97-98 H22A OBD2. I understand the specs are the same, and that for the most part, OBD1 H22s are closed deck and OBD2 H22s are open deck. My holdup has more to do with respective wiring, ecu’s, immo, etc.
If I choose OBD1 engine, there is a ton of information out there detailing the steps involved when wiring OBD1 H22A engine to OBD2 vehicle via the correct ECU map, harness, etc. However, will I still be able to pass emissions?
If I choose OBD2 engine, from what I’ve read, wiring OBD2 H22A engine to OBD2 vehicle isn’t too difficult however the immo in the JDM H22A OBD2s causes concern. I understand it can be removed or get ECU chipped, but CEL will appear and I won’t be able to pass emissions. I’ve read there are ways to bypass IMMO, however I haven’t gotten any feedback on how/who does this and if it really works.
This isn’t going to be a DD but it would be ideal if after the swap I would have no CEL and could pass inspection. It seems that wiring OBD1 engine to OBD2 vehicle has been done more, but wiring is complex. Wiring OBD2 engine to OBD2 vehicle is more straight forward, but bypassing immo without inducing CEL is troublesome.
Is my logic correct? If I can bypass immo in OBD2 H22A, is this a better option in terms of tuning and performance? Sorry for the long post...just want to get opinions on this.

Re: H22A to Civic EK, OBD1 or OBD2? HELP
The engine doesn't decide if it is OBD 1 or 2, the ecu is the deciding factor. Obd1 gives you more tuning abilities over obd2 and thats the reason most run Obd1 unless they are places like Cali where it wouldn't pass emissions.
I put a 98 GSR in my 94 civic with a obd2 engine harness and a obd1 p72 ecu. I literally only had to rewire two wires and it dropped right in and fired up!!!

I have a full EK H2B kit for sale on ebay. Only around 1000 miles on it. Still in mint condition. Take a look.

^ im in MD. i need to research policy here. lets say i do obd2-->obd1 conversion and use chipped p28, and can't pass emissions, how feasible is it to swap in p5m ecu for the test, and go back to chipped p28? would that work? would mods have impact i.e. I/H/E, type s pistons, cams, etc.?

Re: H22A to Civic EK, OBD1 or OBD2? HELP
you need to set the engine up completely for obd2 then use a p5m with the immobilizer removed (or 96 p13 but good luck). after inspected you can swap to obd1. you'd have to swap back to obd2 every year for inspection. I'm going through the exact same thing in NY.

Re: H22A to Civic EK, OBD1 or OBD2? HELP
I have 96 cx and h22a ,,,,,I put h22a into civic and now trying to wire up the engine...... so since it runs through the fire wall im going to use the factory cx harness on h22a.. it seems like some connectors don't connect, so I'm going to have to take the harness out and connect it back onto the d16 engine and start labeling each connector. the obvious is visible, like distributor and speed sensor and oil pressure etc, but the water temp sensor is round amd also is the tps and another sensor that comes on the intake manifold/throttle area.... if any one has done this swap would be nice to know. I checked threads but I find 98+ civics when 96/97 civics are different... so question is 96 ex civic harness on h22a cheat sheet.
