Default H22 civic not sparking?

We just installed an h22 into my buddys 92 civic and the motor is not sparking when it turns over. It's turning over fine but no spark. So we checked to see if it was sparking by taking a spark plug atached to the sparkplug wire and touching it against the motor, but still no spark.... I think it might be the igniter chip but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.... thanks guys.

is your h22 internal or external coil?

Well if you are using the JDM distributor then it wont spark. The crank angle sensor and some other sensors arent lined up properly so you have to get a 92-95 USDM distro from a lude..

hmm this is really weird because on my 95 jdm h22 in my car we never had to change the distributor... So to get my friends jdm 92 motor running we have to use a 92-95 usdm distributor instead of the jdm one? would an f22 one work as well? thanks.

Yes a US one. And no a f22 wont work. However you still also be still getting spark as well. So I would check the ignitor and the coil to make sure they are working properly first because you get a new distro..

Might check to see if the wires inside are all plugged in still. It happened to me...

Does your CEL go off after 2 seconds?

Check ALL grounds. Also make sure your rotor is spinning by taking off the cap.

You might want to replace the plugs/wires, cap/rolor, then lead to the ICM.

But be sure your main relay is turning on (which the CEL comes on for 2 seconds then goes off).

HTH.

Try using your distributor on your friends car. If it starts up then you probably need to replace the ignitor or the coil in his distributor. I just finished up my swap and one of my problems was that the coil had gone bad in the new motors distributor. If it is, just use the coil and ignitor from his old distributor. Thats wat i did, it saves money on buying another one, and time if you have to wait to ship it!

the plugs are new, the wires are new, the cap is new (don't ask why there was no new rotor lol), anyways tomorrow I am going to check to see if the rotor is spinning and if the wires are hooked up inside it I want to see if his 2.2 or my 2.2 will be faster...,

on a different note I am confused right now from what someone said. You can run a jdm distributor on a jdm motor right? or is the distributor on my car a usdm one with out me knowing, but see thats where I am confused becasue I was under the understanding that usdm preludes were external coil and jdm ones were internal, and mine on my car that runs fine is an internal coil...

I'm running JDM internal coil distro on my H22A JDM. No problem. I had the same problem with no spark. My coil was bad. Check the resistence on your primary and secondary winding of the coil. Invest $16 bucks in a VOM it's your best friend in troubleshooting electrical problem. FYI my secondary winding was only off by 3K ohms. Enough to cause the problem.

a civic coil will work. I used a JDM distributor and my car runs fine.

Well it wouldnt work for me. I took apart both my distro's back when I was having the problem and the crank angle sensor on the JDM one was complete 180 the wrong way. The only way the car started with that distro was to put all the spark plugs in the wrong order one plug off. And when it did start it idled and ran like ***. Only until I got a US one did it work.

And I even changed the JDM distro to external coil and reused the old ignitor..

we tested it with a muti meter today and I am pretty much sure the coil is toast. Just out of curiousity how much do civic coils cost? I am guessing the only coils I could use would be a 92-95 civic coil, would any others work?

i jsut installed a JDM H22A into a 92 civic si.....it wouldnt start at first and i had spark but not a good one i checked all my grounds and found i jsut needed to add some, added some grounds and then corrected the firing order since my friend put it one backwards....fired right up, follow the charts in the FSM and from there, also you could try to swap out parts from other distributors if they are available.

You should be able to use any coil from an internal coil civic distributer.

Sounds more like the ignitor than the coil. From my experiences with distributors (and lots of it, with swapping internals and such), usually the coil rarely goes bad, but there's an occasion where when it does, it actually "pops" and you get nothing. With the ignitor, it gradually dies and eventually you can't start the car anymore. Eitherway, try swapping both if you have a spare stock Civic distributor (as the internals & electonics are the same with an OBD-1 JDM H22 distributor), and you should solve your problem. If that doesn't work, make sure your ignitor wire (YEL/GRN) is wired up properly to A21 on the ECU.

thanks guys for the info. We just picked up a distributor from a 94 civic lx today, so I will tell you how it goes once we put the parts in the distributor and turn it over and it runs (hopefully).

well we took apart the h22 distributor today and the ignition coil only sent out 9ohms compared to the books recamended 16. So we popped in the civic lx's healthy 16.4ohms and the 2.2 turned on like a champ. So now the car is running. Thanks guys for the info and help. Who would have known such a little part can prevent a car from running.....
