EG civic B20B/VTEC or H22A?
Sup everyone,
Within the next few weeks, I'll be selling my lude and buying a 92-95 civic. I was wondering which engine would be better for my future plans of an 11 or 10sec street/strip car. I know they both have their strong points and weaknesses. For starters, the H22A comes with a grip of power stock (I should know) but it's a bit heavy for a civic. This is probably my first choice since I don't plan on Auto Xing it or anything. On the other hand, the B20B non vtec is only $800 vs. $2400, not to mention it's 75lbs lighter. How much extra would it cost for a Vtec head? How reliable is a B20/vtec, and how much potential does it have compared to the H22? I'll probably be going turbo in the future, but for now, I want something I can smote on everyday for deliveries. I've also heard people talk about suspension problems and axles poping out with the H22A. I'm assuming that the B20 would be just like swaping a B16 so I wouldn't have such problems. Any info you guys could give would be cool

H22 for sure. All the bullshit about all the problems with H22 have been cover a bazillion times. As far as which one is gonna get you there the easiest depends on how much money you wanna spend. In my opinion stick with h22 for sure. PM for more questions.

I would go h22. If you put in an h22, it is a stock motor and you can't smote the reliability of a stock honda motor.
As far as axle popping out and such, I had that problem with the 90-93 accord halfshaft/ 90-91 teg axles combo, but it turns out it was because the jackass at the auto store gave me two freaking driver side axles. I know, i know everyone knows that you can tell the difference between the two axles from the inner joint splines, and how the spline go all the way through with the driver side axle and only about half way through on the passenger side, but this was my first swap and I didn't know that.
I didn't realize that this was my problem til I looked at the hasports webpage and read their section about axles. According to their site, puting the axles on the wrong sides is a "common" mistake, and will cause the passenger side axle to pop out, which is exactly what was happening to me. Except with my case, I had two of the same axles, so I was screwed and didn't realize it. Many people swear by that axle combo(if you are using the hasports or hcp kit), and NOW I'm sure it will work. I really needed to get my car running though, and I hadn't found out about having two of the same axles yet, so I went out and spent $250 on custom axles from Upgrade Engineering . Another h22 civic guy had referred me to them and said that they were working fine on his car. If these axles break though, I am definately going back to the accord halfshaft/teg axles combo.
An h22 w/ just bolt ons in a civic makes for a pretty damn quick car. That's the reason I went with the h22. I wanted to have a quick car, but I didn't want to start messing with the internals and building of a motor.
It all comes down to money though as h22ek said and how much you wanna put into either setup. I think speed wise an h22 swap with bolt ons is equal to a mildly built b20vtec. The h22 has a ton of torque though, and torque is fun for daily driving.

b20/vtec... If done right it can be just as reliable as any motor. Im ditching my ls block in a few months for a b20. A lot of b20/vtecs make up to 200 at the wheels and they dont have the hassle of the mounts and everything.

so your gonna ditch your block for a b20 block instead of resleeving your ls block and overboring it to 84-86mm? cheaper and stronger that way.

Ive seen some b20 blocks for way cheap.. How much does it usually cost to resleeve a block and bore it out?? Theres not very many machine shops around me so I dunno how to do that.

I'm thinking of doing the H22A swap also over the B18C5... first off it's more cost effective than the b18c....... to me... anything 14 to 13 sec is fast enough.... but i found a great deal on a H22A Type S engine.... Much better output than the B18C5... what's ur opinion in it

IF you send you block out to Golden Eagle it cost 750 and you would pay shipping of coarse. To overbore it cost 125 usually. Machine shops prices differ from place to place but that's usually the average.
