EF HB with AWD?

I have a nice little 88 HB Std, runs fine and all, but in addition to my upcoming swap, I also want to pop in an AWD setup. Can I do this with older 87 and older Wagon parts, or do I need to look into a CRV setup?

There is an 88-91 4WD Civic wagon. However, the drivetrain in these Civic 4WDs is not very "robust".

can a custom shop rebuild and fabricate stronger parts, or is it a lost cause?
