Default Do JDM ECUs communicate with OBD2 scantools?

People buying JDM swaps that are "OBD2" seem to expect that this swap will pass emmisions in an USDM OBD2 chassis while trying to use the JDM ECU.

The short answer to "Will I pass with an OBD2 JDM ECU" is NO. Trying to use my scantool on a supposed OBD2 JDM ECU yeilded nothing but communication errors. And it really pissed off this member because he expected that when emmisions came due, he could roll into the station, get hooked up to the scanning machine and be done with it.....but this just ain't gonna happen.

So this is a FYI to the people looking to use JDM ECU's in an USDM OBD2 chassis and expect to pass emmisions....it ain't gonna happen.

If you are trying to get the codes by using the scanner, it will not work. Just jump the connector. I am trying to get the info it see if you can switch the pins for this and OBD2 JDM ecu problem.

I posted in the thread in tech. Good info.

Should I start looking into an OBD1 ECU / or Hondata / or AEM ? I can't get any code out using jumper and CEL.

I jump the test connector and turn key to on and look at the CEL, OK

Default

just get a P28 or P30 if you want a knock sensor and have it chipped for ITR maps

** forgot about the emissions part, if you didn't have to worry about emissions^**

Well OBD2 was precipitated by USDM emissions requirments. I suspect that JDM cars migrated to OBD2 simply to ease manufacturing costs. AS in they use one homogenous connector.

It's interesting that the JDM cars wouldn't have this functionality enabled, In that it gives dealerships an additional diagnostic tool to service cars. It seems honda of japan would actually have to engineer a whole other ecu/software combo to achieve this, which really seems like shooting themselves in the foot both financially and strategically.

I trust EE Chris' opinion, but I'd like to see more info on this. I mean, what scantools do dealerships use in JDM-land... Ya'know?

Thanks again for this info, I'd like your opinion, for this '92 civic w/ '97 JDM GSR , should I look for a P72 ECU ??
