not really, I had PHK pistons and I just enlarged the valve reliefs about 3mm which gave me lots of clearance, just took me forever to do...

It depends on whos doing it and with what.
I had about a 6 tool system w/ my dremel.
1) I had a cutting tool, it looked like a ball with sharp edges that spun around to quickly and roughly remove material.
2) A super hard green hard stone shaped like a cone, helped smooth out and continue to remove material
3) A brown hard stone shaped like a cone which further helped remove and smooth material
4) A gray soft stone polishing disc
5) A wire wheel brush
6) A cloth cone shaped bit with polishing compound
The whole process took about 6 hours.
The pistons came out so well, my friend came over and looked at the pistons and was asking when I was going to dremel out the valve reliefs... when I told him that I already did he was in utter shock that they came out that great.
Its all about time and effort, the people who you saw do their own valve reliefs prolly didnt give a ****.
