Car is disabled for now. H22 story.
Well was out picking up something in the Q-boro area when I heard this god aweful noise coming from the engine bay. Pop open the hood and I hear this sqeaking scratching noise and it seemed to be coming from the distributor. Then after going around the block the car just shut off and refused to turn over again. Check spark, coil, fuel everything was right but nothing. Even changed out the distributor and cap, and spark plugs. Even tried jump starting the car from a roll and nothing. So now I am thinking its the dreaded auto tensionor on the ludes that has failed..
Now I gotta take of the timing cover and check out my theories... If it is though, and no vavles have been bent or broken I am going to attempt to do the manual tensioner swap from the h23.. Who has done this before and what is involved in doing such a procedure.. Is this something I should just bring to my mechanic to deal with..
Thoughts, comments, suggestions welcome. Hopefully I can have this all figured out to get to both the meet and the track this month..

Maybe the alternator bearing went out, that would make a scretching noise. Check if you can turn the alternator pulley with your hand with out the belt on and check for any play in the pulley.

Yeah I am talking about that tensioner but I dont even know yet for sure.. Here is some more info:
Popped the hook open to hear this loud disgusting noise coming from the distributor. Took off the cap and saw a lot of rust colored dust covering everything. I was like **** that is a lot of carbon buildup. Wiped off everything and cleaned up as best I could but it was still squeaking badly. Tried to get the car back home and it died on me like 20 minutes later. Checked spark, coil, fuel. Changed cap, rotor and plugs and still nothing. Any ideas?
The car cranks but doesnt start for anything. Any other ideas..

I am getting spark at the wires and at the coil, so the ICM module should be fine..
Or am I looking at it the wrong way?

It's your distributor. My friend had this on his car, and was a very ear boggling squeeking noise from the distributor.
I installed another distributor on it, and it was fixed.

dont forget to make sure the distributor rotor did not walk, it's happened to me before, also replace the entire distributor because if the bearing siezed your distributor is fucked.

Correct sir. Also, if you can't find another 92-95 H22A distributor (JDM ones are rare to find but have the internal coil), then you can swap out the guts from any 92-95 Civic distributor, since it's the same ignitor/coil/bearings/parts as the JDM OBD-1 H22 distributors.

Thanks guys I guess I will have to go with that option. My distro is from a civic currently and was already setup for the MSD connection. So I guess I will just have to go distro hunting.. Should I get it from a hard or from Honda?

Try junkyards.
BTW, can you use an F22 (95 Accord EX) distributor? I got one in the garage if you can use it.

Try getting one from a shop or something. You won't find one at a junkyard due to the fact that it is internal coil and are pretty hard to find. Don't try Honda, that ****'s like $900. If you can't find one in your area, let me know and I will find you one. I just got two in the past week. Too bad one was a bunk product and they won't let me return it. Good luck.

Well I just called a shop and they said that they did have it. But they wanted to see the old one for reference. So hopefully by tomorrow I will have something to work with. Took out the old one and the shaft was very hard to turn and felt very rugged so it seems that the bearings are shot like everyone was saying..
Thanks guys. I will keep everyone updated. At least now you know what to do if it ever happens. I just hope that is all it is.
And my car is setup for external coil already so it wouldnt matter I would still have to jut it out and setup again for the MSD.

Quick question. So far I could not find a prelude distro, however if I do get my hands a Civic one, is changing out the internals a do it yourself process. Or would I have to get the bearings pressed out and re-pressed back into the housing..??
Sorry but this is the first time I have had to mess with a distributor in this type of fashion..

Definitely not your auto tensioner. Pull that distributor off and see if it is hard to turn. My F22 in my Prelude did this, just put a distributor on it and all is good, I hope. And for future reference, if you hear a crazy noise, turn the car off before serious damage happens!! Good luck.
