Which cable tranny is best?
I am getting ready to swap a b16 into my civic. I am having a hard time finding information on the cable trannys. Which is best for the b16? What is the difference between the s1, y1, ys1...?

S1=super short gears
Y1=Longer gears
Y1 LSD=self explanatory
I had the S1 in my car it rips! Sucks at highway speeds though going 85mph its at 5500 RPM's

the usdm s1 is a tall tranny and does not work well with b16a. the jdm s1 is very short and if you like to bang gears this is the one for you. i had a b20z with a jdm s1 and at 55mph rpm was 5000 or so.

B-Gears
Gear/MPH Calculator
Are you sure?
I have a usdm YS1 (93 GSR) tranny which is a little shorter than the jdm S1 (see above link, and mine is dosent hit 5k rpmk until 85mph.
I would say the best all-around tranny setup would be Y1 w/ LSD.

best trans=YS1 W/LSD. for
it can be rebuilt with USDM parts. has short gearing, which u need with a b16. and has double synchros on the 2nd gear, while all other cable trans, only have 1

you could tell what trans you have by comparing what it drives like against this site http://www.autocrossing.com/cgi-bin/gearcalc.cgi
otherwise there's really no way to identify cable trannies.
as for the 5th, i used to use a JDM S1 trans but i too had the low 5th. it was like switching from 4th to 6th. in 5th gear i would hit about 4400rpm at 90mph. since i killed that tranny i switched to a 93 GSR YS1 trans and it is geared almost identical to the S1 (1st-4th) i used to use with the exception of the 5th gear. in 5th now i usually run about ~4050rpm at 70mph.
i received my S1 trans with a B16 motor and it was never cracked open before i used it either. i'm starting to think that either some S1's came with a low 5th, or some people from JDM-land decided to swap 5ths for us. hell if i know.

I personally like the J1. 5th gear 3000 rmps is only 50mph though. I usually drive about 70 -80 on the freeway.
70= 4250
80 = 4750
I get around 30mph so it cant be that bad on the engine.

Re: Which cable tranny is best? (Monty)
yeah personally 4000+ for freeway cruising at just 70mph is a bit much for me as i'm not running a B16 setup, but this thing is built/balanced and i'm getting used to it. besides being able to just mash 5th and get moving is nice.
4000+ for a B16 setup like yours should be nothing though to worry about though.
