Default B16a OBD?

I have acquired a B16a engine and cable LSD transmission. I currently have a Canadian 95 Civic CX (hatchback) which I plan on putting the B16 into in the coming year. I am trying to do my homework and get all the necessary parts together so I am prepared and ready when the weekend comes to do the swap.

My current dilemma is figuring out which OBD version this engine is. First off, the proper distributor was not on this engine. It was running with a dizzy from a DA Integra (don't ask me how, it wasn't pretty)

The ECU in the Integra was I do believe OBD0 (green plug and black plug?)

The engine is stamped B16A. Engine #:1406053. Transmission: YS1 - 1037626. Head casting: PR3-1.

If anyone can chime in and help out if would be greatly appreciated.

its a obd0 b16a

you will need a hydro tranny and obd1 dizzy and a obd1 ecu

you need 94+ teg mounts and mount brackets

and if your gonna keep a/c you will the a/c bracket from delsol vtec with the b16a in it

How do you know? The Ecu it was running on was a OBD0 ecu for a non-vtec motor, it was a hack job. This is why I don't know.

looks like an OBD1 to me. I remember reading that the size of the font on the "DOHC" and "VTEC" parts can indicate OBD0/1 (as long as the valve cover wasn't changed), also I believe the OBD0 B16a's had the "PGM-FI" stamp on the plenum.

In any case it doesn't really matter; the OBD1 engines have slightly more aggressive cams so they make supposedly like 10 extra horsepower. The only differences on the engine are the distributor, fuel injectors, and exhaust manifold (OBD0 had 2 O2 sensors most of the time). But obviously all of those things can be swapped.
I'm currently running an OBD1 B16a in my CRX with OBD0 electronics; all I had to do was swap the distributor and the injector plugs.

Ps. The throttle body is not the original B16 TB, I do believe that is also a DA Integra piece. The map sensor was ziptied to the firewall. I suppose I forgot to mention that bit. Any other reasoning?

I read the same things somewhere. I'd really like to agree with you but I need some kind of concrete way of knowing. I think I read that there's a difference on how the aluminum plates bolted on top of the cams were produced as well. Something like: OBD0 were cast and OBD1 were extruded. Not 100% sure though.

Some, OBD1 B16As, maybe all have a firewall map sensor. A friend of mine has a '92 RHD JDM SiR EG6, stock B16A firewall mounted map sensor. Theres a few other things that make me think its OBD1 as well, vtec solenoid plug is grey, OBD0 versions are a milky clear color, intake manifold doesn't have PGM-FI like most honda OBD0 engines. Easiest way to check though would be to simply check the date stamp on the head, its next to one of the exhaust ports.

Can anyone decipher these stamps/castings?

EDIT: If it is in fact OBD1, does that narrow down which type of B16A it is? I've been told that block stampings without any number suffix after B16A- means that the motor is JDM. Now, does the fact that it might be/is OBD1 mean it's from a particular car?

the 9/2 stamp indicates that the engine was manufactured in '92 thereby making it OBD1, its most likely from JDM Civic SiR or JDM integra. The block stamp should read B16A if its JDM or have a number after the A if its from another country.

yes b16a's are jdm

the head have 92 on it so it must be obd1

The vtec solenoid has a obd-1 plug on it. It's hard to tell because both obd-0/1 are so idenical visually. Intake manifold is deffinatly obd-1, throttle body obd-0.


Pull a spark plug and see what the piston says. p30 means obd-1, pr3 means obd-0.
I believe they changed somthing internally because obd-0 b16's are 160hp, and obd-1 are 170.

That is the most direct and solid method so far. However, it is 99% impossible to see anymore than a square inch of the piston through the spark plug hole. I'll check it out when I change the valve seals.

If by CRX you mean del sol then possibly. Del Sols were rebadged as CRX Del Sols and in some cases simply CRXs in certain markets. But it could have just as easily come from a '92 JDM Civic SiR.
