Default b16 vs. b20

i want to buy an ef hatch, and do some sort of swap. Now I'm thinking either b16 or b20. even after all the searches i have done I still need some info. At hondamotorsonline i could get the first gen. b16 for 1550 +shipping with the LSD transmission, then I would have to get mounts 400-500? and plus money for the unforseen problems right? so that would be somewhere in the range of like 2000-2200. then a b20 longblock at hondamotors online is 800 plus shipping, gsr tranny like 750-800 shipped? then i would need to get an ECU and axels? anything more? would i need mounts? so then in theory couldn't a b20 be near the same price as a b16? all i really want out of the car is quick off the line, and good to be a daily driver, and really just to have fun. so would the b20 be better if i just want a quick car, because it has more tourque? how important is VTEC? would the stock b16 be faster than the stock b20? and to get crvtec would i just have to get a new head, and then ECU? which would be an easier swap? sorry there is so many questions, i just really couldn't find good enough answers through searches and such...thanks in advance for all your'e help.

I would personally go with a B18B if I had to start from scratch. You have so much more options later on with a B18. You could add boost if you want to go FI...or if you decide you want VTEC...you could do that too with a LS/VTEC.
But of course if thats not an option...just go with the B16. Its a nice little engine that should last you a while.

ill try and answer some of your q's.
b16 will be the easiest swap by far (most bang for your buck) + you get LSD & VTEC
If you wanna have fun VTEC is that.
any B-series motor will require mounts.
i dunno much about crvtec - but if you wanna hit 8k rpm I believe you have to do a bit more than just get a new head
thought about a B18? more torque and comes w/ VTEC.
I run a B18c1 in my 88 crx and its great - the only difference in the fit in the engine bay compared to the B16 is I had to chop out the hood supports to close the hood - dunno if this is the case with the B20..
hope this helps...
try the EF forum for more particular q's.

im not a honda pro, but i think the b20 long block is going to require more than axles and a ecu to get started...you just want somthing that can move a little right?

i think a b16 would be easier to swap...throw in some toda cams, itr valve springs and retainers. maybe a couple bolt on's and maybe get somthing like a chipped p28 and i'd say youd have some daily driving fun with that

but im not speaking from experiance....you want somthing that runs 13's? then id go with the b20 vtec, but personally i'd leave that project to someone a little more experianced than myself or you for that matter, unless your willing to spend the dough for someone else to do it

hope that can help a little

i have a friend that lives around here who said him and his buddies would basically do the swap, with me watching so i learn whats all going on. What are the differences between the B18 like a, b and c1 and all those? also how much are they compared to the b16? also what is the difference between the gen. 1 and 2 b16's besides like a grand? And if i do get the b18 and later decide to go LS/VTEC would all i need to do is get the new head and ECU? thanks all

If you want something that is quick off the line, go with the B20. The B20 has ALOT mroe torque than the B16A. It is no more diffucult to swap in. But it will be more expensive. However, if torque is what you want. Go for the B20. As for the LS motor, I would not even consider it. I had one before my B20 and found it to be a disappointment. I would not recommend this motor to anyone. As for mods available for the B20 vs LS, any LS mod can be done on a B20.

B20 for sure. No replacement for displacement, except BOOST

I too am deciding between these 2 engines (b16 and b20). I think I am going to go with the b20, since it has more low end. The b16 is cool but it has very little torque...

B20 + Turbo Rules!

B20 will drop right in, you can use LS Axles, etc...

Same **** as a B18B but with MORE torque.
