Automatic with B16-18?
hey all. I own a 91 CRX (AUTOMATIC) and i want to swap in a b series engine. the old d series transmission will not bolt onto the b block correct? so, does this mean i'd need an automatic b series transmission, or convert the car to manual? i really do not have the resources to change over to manual... in which case, am i basically stuck in the ZC range? on me... help please

You can use an LS automatic, but an ECU to control the tranny and VTEC will be difficult to arrange. Maybe an LS-auto ecu remapped with VTEC maps?

they did make a few automatic b16's and h22a's in Japan from what I understand... I know of a website that can get you an auto tranny w/ b16, I'll try to post it later if I can find it again

uh.... the auto B series swap will be just as expensive as a 5speed B swap. You won't have to buy the clutch stuff, but the slushbox trannies cost more, and the ecu will likely cost you more. You can NOT use the tranny in your car now.

Re: Automatic with B16-18? (JDMspecEG6)
I did a jdm b16a auto swap in my 95 civic. I did it because my d15 took a crap and I have to keep my car for awhile and wanted a fresh motor(could not find a good d15/16). B16a auto's are much cheaper than a 5-speed. I got mine from hondamotorsonline for 1800 shipped which include engine, trans, and ecu. There is a catch however. My upper trans mount had to moved an 1/2 to 1" foward. So I had to re-weld the mount. Other than that, it was bolt-in. As far as you crx, it might be a more complicated swap.

I have a 91 CRX DX it was an automatic. I put a 96 B18B1 motor with 92 GSR manual cable tranny in it. In your case, a B16A swap would be no different. If you buy a 1st gen B16A swap with manual tranny it will drop in with a mount kit. You don't need to reweld or modify the mounts at all.
In addition to the basic swap, you'll need a mount kit, shift linkage and a manual pedal board. You could also get a first gen B16A with automatic tranny but I think you would be much happier with a manual

i had the same problem when i did my swap auto to stick and b18 My upper trans mount had to moved an 1/2 to 1" closer to the fire wall and flipped up side down . And re-weld the mount. Other than that, it was bolt-in. As well but well worth it to see that hatch haul some ***.

Re: Automatic with B16-18? (couter)
i got all the automatic parts bseries part for sale if you need it. PM or email me if you need parts...
and as for prices of both, it really depends. if you do a ghetto *** manual, like a cable tranny, or a pos ls one, then eh, it might not be worth it. im assuming you want to swap and get some power...
i would only swap if you get a good manual transmission like si/R/gsr and a lightened flywheel. i say wait till you got the money for it, adn then do it...
do it once, and do it right...

Re: Automatic with B16-18? (AzN_Flava)
should i Bypass the BS and buy a 94 Del Sol Vtech 1.6 DOHC manual with 87,000 on it and a new clutch and exhaust? they want 5200$ for it but for a 17yearold, getting a loan means full coverage and i dont know how much insurance will be

By the way, I don't think it is even possible to mount a B-series automatic transmission in a 1988-1991 car. A typical Hasport or Place Racing transmission bracket won't work.

That's probably one of the most retarded thing I've ever heard... Not only is the gearing totally WRONG for boost but auto trannies aren't made to handle any form of FI... Trust me that's a total waste of time, it isn't hard at all to swap to manual... The only time I would consider an "auto" style (airshift/sequential) tranny is for a 800whp+ SP/FWD or Hot Rod car, hehe In that case (if they are legalized this year) then you drop $20K and don't have to worry about shattering gears and cracking main/countershafts... Those trannies are designed with boost in mind, their gearing is correct and they are stronger than OE counterparts... OE automatics don't work like that... Just my $0.02
