Default Advice on b20/vtec route

Hello all,

Eventually I will be swapping a b20 in place for my d. Would you all recommend that I have the head swap done BEFORE it goes into the car or would it be just as easy to do the head swap with the motor in the engine bay?

I'm really interested in seeing what the b20 itself does, after that, do the head swap, and go from there. However, I'm willing to drop that if its a major pain to install the vtec head on a motor thats sitting in an engine bay.

Any thoughts on this?

swap the motor in first and see how that performs, its not a major PITA to swap heads after

actually doing a head in the car is my choice because the motor is stationary

It's stationary when it's on an engine stand as well

You will run into a problem if you try to swap heads later because the b20 piston valve reliefs are not deep enough to accomodate a vtec head.

ACTUALLY YOU CAN RUN UP TO CTR CAMS WITHOUT HITTING THE VALVES AS LONG AS THE CAM GEARS ARE AT 0. BUT YES YOU ARE CORRECT THE VALVE POCKETS IN A B20 PISTON AR 31MM(INTAKE) AND THE STOCK VTEC VALVE IS 33MM SO YOU DO HAVE TO BE CAREFUL BUT YOU CAN DO IT.

I was in the same situation. I ended up putting the stock b20 in b/c it is just as easy to install the head in the car as out. And actually I was very impressed with the b20 in my integra. And right now I am not putting the money into vtec I am just going to put a Gsr tranny on to suprise people.
