94 Civic DX and Engine Compatibility
OK guys here's the story. I have a 94 DX that I will be restoring and sending to a friend in Missouri.
So #1 it has to pass state emissions.
#2 It will remain OBD I. (if possible, tell me if it will not be)
I am in the process of obtaining engine parts to build a D16Y8. My friend is just interested in a reliable car. And she doesn't even know about the new motor. But the 192,000 miles on the DX motor are just too many for her too feel confident with the car. Plus if she decides a little ways dwon the road that she doesn't want it, I will have first dibs on it, and I want it in this configuration.
Right now a 2000 Civic EX head (minus dizzy) is pending sale.
Will this year head force me to use OBD II??
Will the sensors from the DX work??
What about the distributor, will any from a 92-98 work??
What about the block, any EX or Si D series block from 92-00 should work right??
Are all the D16Y8's the same (other than OBD I or II from 92-present?? And thus making parts all interchangeable??
Any other vital info is very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken

That depends on the state's emission laws. Some states only require your car's year or newer motor, other's require that the newer motor also have all the electronics and emissions equipment if installed. I'd check into that first.

Yes. Most OBD1 and OBD2 sensors are the same with the same plug style, only a few are different.

You can use a modded 92-95 or a 96-00 repinned with OBD1 plugs.

Any 88-00 D series SOHC motor will work as long as you use the 92-95 mounts. If you are looking to stay low budget, look into a low mileage D16Y7 from the 96-00 DX/LX/X. They are very plentiful and can be had for really cheap, usually low miles for about $300 complete longblock.

For the most part yes. There aren't any OBD1 Y8's, they were only OBD2 (96-98)and OBD2B (99-00). The only real difference is the intake manifold in the auto and manual versions.
