What Vtec really is?

Not sure i agree with that...i'd probobly have to say that the invention of the internal combustion engine kinda trumps this in that none of it would exist without such...and then you could go on about something that contributed to the development of such engine...the words "Best thing to ever happen" is so singular, honda's VTEC development certainly was a milestone in automotive history, but as far as i know, they werent even the first company to toy with the idea...i think that lies with BMW and their airplane engines or something, not sure...

nah, toyota was the first manufacturer to put something like vtec into their cars. honda just did and became famous for it cause theirs was so efficient

well i stand corrected.. well honda was the first to make it work properly..

actually Alfa Romeo did it first but it was never mass produced. Honda took their idea, actually made it work by making it simple.
Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki now have VVT-i (exact copy of VTEC without the reliability)
Mitsubishi has MIVEC
Gruppo Fiat also have variable valve timing (nothing to brag about)
BMW has VANOS (the evolution of VTEC, and much better + "smarter")
and to answer the original question about what VTEC is... more air = more power (in a nutshell), VTEC gives more Air.
