What happened to my Cat?
So I had a CEL come on for 2nd O2 Sensor. Around the same time I started hearing a stupid rattle, not unlike a loose heatshield.
So this past weekend I get around to jacking the car up, and when I pull the O2 sensor out of the cat, 1/2 of it is gone... The end is just sheared off.
So I remove the cat, to see that the internal core has completely come loose from the housing, and is sliding around. It sheared the end off of the O2 Sensor and is responsible for the awful rattling.
1) How the hell did this happen?
2) Does anyone need a cat with a loose core inside for the cheap?
3) Does anyone have a used cat for cheap and in a hurry?
2003 S2k, btw... 50k miles...

The same thing happened to me. The cat material came loose and sheared off the O2 sensors. I pried it back and installed a new sensor. That worked just fine, but the old O2 head worked it's way to the bottom of the cat and started to rattle like diesel. I replaced the cat at that point.

Funny you say that. At lunch I went to Hoehn Honda in Carlsbad, CA to get tranny fluid and decided what the heck I'll ask. I spoke to Morgan in service and he said to put it back together and drive it over, but if my description was accurate the cat and O2 sensor should be under warranty.
This guy has taken care of me in the past when he had no reason to other than being a great guy. If anyone needs anything I highly recommend talking to Morgan at Hoehn. I'll be bringing it in sometime this week and I'll update if anything exciting happens.
YAY!

why, like stated before, cats are covered 8yr/80k miles.
Hondas have lifetime warranties on seat belts too

Just thought I'd update this thread if anyone was curious.
So I brought the car back in, and they called me a few hours later and said
"Hey James, so you have a bad cat. You knew that! You have a bad O2 sensor. You knew that too! Unfortunately my boss says we can't cover the sensor since it isn't under warranty"
Unsatisified with that, I told him I'd call him back. I called American Honda at 1-800-999-1009 (then press #5) and spoke to a complaint man. I complained to the complaint man.
"The broken cat is what killed the sensor, it obviously should be covered too. This is my 7th Honda, blah blah"
Long story short, Honda called the dealer and ok'd the sensor too.
The WHOLESALE cost on just the cat and sensor was $1100. That's not even what I would've paid, that's just what they're billing for the warranty work.
YAY!
