Specific question on modifications
Hi,
I have a 2004 Ap1 S2000 and after about 6 months of owning and loving it, i thought i might make a few mods to it (as you do). I have ordered a J's Racing SS Test Pipe, J's Racing CF Tsuchinoko Air Intake Kit, a J's Racing Engine Torque Damper and some Neuspeed Lowering Springs - Sport - just to give it that slightly better stance.
Couple of questions - do you think i will see a noticable difference in speed delivery (mainly the intake and test pipe)? and secondly, the same company are trying to tease me with a set of J's racing headers. Combined with the test pipe - is it worth going the extra for the headers? i know they will save me some weight, but given that from the test pipe back, i am leaving the exhaust alone - is it worth spending the money?
All opinions appreciated.
Cheers,
Bigmacnfries
P.S. - was going to post some pics of my S, but when i click insert image - i just get this: [IMG][/IMG]

i dont expect that you will see too much of a difference with the intake and test pipe alone. with the addition of headers i think it would make it more noticeable.

your supposed to put the location of the picture between them.
for example

thanks for that - my pics are local on my computer - i don't think it was happy about uploading directly from there. Thanks for the help on the headers. So you think it will make a difference, even not changing the rest of the exhaust (reason i am reluctant to change the exhaust, is that i like the look and the sound of the stock - i would only go slightly louder so long as it was a deeper note at low revs)
Cheers.
Cheers.
If you have a 04 then its ont a AP1 its an AP2. And yea Deff get the header you will notice some gains nothing huge but the car will breath easier. If you got the j's 70mm single to compliment the tp and header you would deff feel the power increase esp if you were to get a standalone ecu like the aem ems and tune it then you would be golden. But 70mm singles are loud so I geuss thats out of the picture.
you can upload the photos on photobucket pretty easy, just have to create an account. http://www.photobucket.com
an exhaust would defineatly help make a larger difference but if you want to keep the stock look and sound then your options are limited. just keep listenin to the other guys that know better than i do

It's definitely an AP1 - i think the cars were introduced differently in America and some other parts of the world - it has the revised lights, wheels etc. etc. so looks like an AP2, but definitely has the Ap1 engine.
Thanks for your thoughts, and i totally agree - i would love to go the whole hog, but i want to keep the look and not go too much louder, plus the budget for mods is getting stretched already!

I still think its considered an AP2 if its an 04 even though you still have the F20. Go look at your VIN and tell me if it says AP1 or AP2.

Can't remember the VIN, though i thought it did start with AP1 - either way i see your point. It is an AP1 engine in a AP2 styled car! - crazy.
Just to clarify thoughts - you think the header would make a difference even without changing the exhaust? So is the breathing restriction in the headers? I don't want to spend a lot of money to find that it makes no difference unless you change the exhaust too.
THanks for the replies.

Oour stock header kicks *** for an oem header it was designed by mugen and so was the exhaust system. And you will feel some gains when you slap on the J's header esp after a day or two when the ECU learns it. But you would benifit more from the header if you had a better flowing exhaust.
Basicly
Header + tp = Good
Header + tp + a 70mm single = Great
F20

Just wacked the test pipe on my car (J's racing cat killer), and it is way better than i expected. It gives a slightly noticeable (but noticeable none the less) performance increase, and the sound is pretty close to perfect. Still real quiet at idle and minimal revs, but after about 30-40% throttle, it starts to sing, and at WOT, it's perfect. As for VTEC.... i have to calm down.

y did u got with the neuspeed springs... you spent all that money on baller parts and then skimped on the springs???
lots of research suggested that they were a pretty good spring - also they work will with the stock shocks. Also, they guy i order all my stuff through knows about all there is to know about Hondas, and he highly recommended them over way more expensive ones. Also, i will be looking to go shocks and springs some time in the future. I'm sticking them on today, so will give feedback accordingly.
Do you have any information about them being bad - i would be most interested...
Cheers.

i agree, but then again i favor coilovers.
your not gonna feel a big gain, but you will notice something, mainly from the test pipe. the test pipe frees up a good gain, but the intake is basically makes power based on velocity. you drive, the intake works better
my suggestion is to get a light exhaust. you'll notice a big gain is acceleration due to the weight loss of the exhaust.

yup - the test pipe is on and is an amazing mod - bang for buck it's hard to beat. i favour coilovers too, but my car has such minimal miles on it, the shocks will be fine. Coilovers will come when the budget comes!
which exhaust would you personally recommend - i know there are a ton of threads - i am looking at twin tip which isn't the lightest, but i love the look of twin tip.

I would think this is a pretty light and not too loud dual. http://www.evasivemotorsports....NG-ES
But I would get this. Super light and awesome powergains. Cant really top it.

then you should have just spent the money on better springs imo...

when you say better springs - can you back it up with some facts? - i'm intruiged - are Neuspeed bad springs - if so, why? compared to what? i would like to know more...
our header and exhaust were not designed by mugen. if it was designed by mugen why would they put out their own verison of the header and exhaust..? dont post up false info if you dont have the facts

i hate to sound like a broken record with a biased opinion, but the best springs you can buy for the money are Swifts... there found on a lot of high end coil setups... i mean you spent a shitload of $$$ of that intake the least you could do is spend a lil more on the springs... just my opinion... i havent actually tested out neuspeed but what i hear they arent that great (bouncy ride)... i mean i could be wrong and i have, but for the extra $75 or so i would have went with swifts... but to each his own...

yup, i've heard good things on the swifts also, but again the recommendations from people who know far more than me where - swifts are excellent but give a much firmer ride - the Nue's are designed to feel the same as stock around town but stiffer under load, and the swifts were significantly more expensive than the Nue's. I've only had the Neuspeed on for about 36 hours so far, so the following feedback is a little early days (i normally give 2 or 3 days to settle). The drop is about what i was looking for - gives the car a nice stance. Ride appears completely unaffected, but when you push it round a corner, it feels a lot stiffer than before. Given my new lower centre of gravity, i would say that is a win-win for me - i didn't want a firmer ride - here in NZ, the roads are not the best so a stiff ride would have been uncomfy. So far, i am extremely satisfied, but like i say -early days.

actually the swifts are designed to ride a lil more firm than stock and they only drop it .7 in the front and 1.0 in the back... thats the whole reason i bought mine as well... def didnt want to scrape everywheres and I DD my car as well... if u dont like the neu's give the swifts a try...
