Should I buy an S2000?
Hey everyone, I'm back after 3 years of not owning a Honda. My current car is getting to the point of being too expensive to keep due to repairs/gas/etc and I'm thinking about getting an S2000 and just wanted some opinions.
First of all some background info about previous cars. My first car was a 91 CRX Si which was a great car in my opinion. I upgraded the suspension, tires, stripped it, added a rollcage and eventually wrecked it on my 3rd time out at PIR, but overall I loved the handling of the car.
In searching for a new car, I test drove a 2001 S2000 and really loved the fit and feel of it (I'm 5'4" so the interior worked very well for me) but I was disappointed by the lack of torque. Despite this, I went back with the intent to purchase it from the dealer and received such poor service from the salesperson that I left.
Before finding another S2000 I got the opportunity to pick up a 1991 MR2 Turbo in very good shape and that has been my daily driver for the last 2-3 years. With the changes I've made over the last few years, it currently puts out 425 hp on pump and a hair over 500 hp on 100 octane. I hit full boost at around 3100-3200 RPM so it has a fairly wide torque band and love the power but the cost to maintain it and the price of gas is just killing me right now. Furthermore I really don't like the feel of the car in corners and the price of upgrading the suspension to a point where I would be satisfied is just ridiculous. Things are not breaking due to the power output at this point (other than tires ) but more due to the age of the car... everything is just needing to be replaced all at once
I guess what I'm looking for here is some opinions on the costs involved in an S2000, as well as feedback from anyone that has owned a supercharged S2000. This would probably be the direction I would head if I purchased one. (supercharger kit brand suggestions would also be appreciated so I can research them a little more)

Id say get the s2k. You wont be disappointed. And depending on what youre looking for out of the engine...there are some good superchargers for the s2k. The supercharger Im thinking about getting gets about 300whp but almost like 260ft-tq...numbers pry are a little higher but Im being a little subtle right now. Plus I dont want to look everything up right now to be exact. But I do know that there are only 3 s2ks with the kit as of Import Alliance in Nashville last weekend. The developer of the kit was there...and its a uber nice setup. Expensive tho.

IIRC, superchargers from Vortech or Comptech are around $4-5k ish for everything.
I've heard great things on S2KI for reliability. try http://www.s2ki.com. The rumor is that the guy from modifry has a supercharged 200k mile S2000. It was supercharged for 80something thousand miles before (180k total miles on the engine) before it needed replacement.
The general consensus is that it's pretty reliable. I've even seen dealers selling brand new comptech supercharged S2000s with full warranties.
Dump the weird Toyota. Buy an S2000 and never look back. The S2000 is much more refined, more reliable, has a better suspension, better chassis, better handling, newer technology, etc. etc.
I like MR2s...but they dont hold a candle to the S2000.
Glad to know that you actually road race cars. Seems like that was a dissapearing hobby on the S2000 forums...talk about irony.

Re: Should I buy an S2000? (B serious)
So right now the only 2 supercharger kits are centrifugal units correct? From what I've read these two kits also using a rising rate fuel pressure regulator rather than a chip or aftermarket ECU. I would greatly prefer doing it the right way and use a standalone.
Does anyone currently make a roots type supercharger for the S2000? Not necessarily a complete kit but just the supercharger unit and intake manifold? The only thing I didn't like about driving the S2000 was the lack of low end torque that I'm now accustomed to and I just don't think the peaky torque of a centrifugal supercharger is what I'm looking for.

Try using the AP2 trans or a lower diff gear.
With the AP2 trans, the advantage is that the 6th gear engine speeds are reduced. The synchros are better, gear spacing is better, etc.
With the diff gears, there's ultimately more effective torque increase...but at the cost of high engine speeds on the freeway.
Either would be cheaper, simpler, and most likely safer than the supercharger.
I dont know if anyone makes a roots for the S2000...although I've never really found the low end torque to be irritatingly lacking. Lacking, yes...but not so bad.

The Kraftwerks You-Tune Kit is pretty nice, although it doesn't seem to have any advantage over Vortech or Comptech in quality or price. Does anyone have experience using this kit?

If you can lean forward without pulling yourself forward by the steering wheel it's lacking in low end torque just kidding... kinda lol

I've always been a big fan of Hondata, though I haven't seen the new stuff they've released in the last 2 years. Since then I've been messing around with Haltech, Motec, and Megasquirt. Not a big fan of Haltech after using it but the other two were top-notch for very different reasons.
