Default Shifting

Do you down shift when you are everyday driving? Also is it normal to hear noise (almost like a click) when shifting into gear especially 2nd and 3rd? Thanks.

Hmm, I'd rather save my clutch than brakes. Think about the price between a clutch job/kit and a brake pad set. And before you speak about rev matching, no matter how precise you get a rev match, you are still wearing your clutch.

That said, I still downshift

However, I ONLY downshift when I'm not going to stop (entering a turn/corner). If I'm going to stop at a red light, what's the point of downshifting? Just put it in neutral and come to a stop. You're wasting gas and your clutch life by downshifting to a stop.

Coming to a stop light, I'll usually downshift into third, just in-case the light turns green before I get there. If it doesn't turn green by the time I get there I drop it into neutral.

lol...doing your brakes takes 10 mins? Doing your clutch does not take 10 mins.

I know you CAN downshift. I do it sometimes. But someone said you HAVE to downshift. I disagreed in my own little smug way lol

I usually put it in neutral and hit the brakes to slow down.

thats what i do. brake pads are cheaper than a new clutch, plus you save some gas that way

You can downshift when your daily driving.. Its not really a problem.. I down shift whenever I need too.. Like if I'm going too slow in high gears.. Downshift to get the power back lol ... but just don't downshift in higher speeds.. Lower gears will mess up if u do it too much.

Yep, it's perfectly normal. When you're sitting still with the clutch not pressed in, one of the shafts in the transmission is still spinning. When you suddenly press the clutch in and move the shifter into gear, you're putting something that's not moving against something that's spinning. You didn't give it enough time to match speeds. (Apologies as I forgot the shaft name, but I'm giving the basic rundown of what happens).

Try this next time. Next time you're about to put it in gear, press the clutch in and wait a few seconds. Then push it into gear, you won't gear the clunk.

It's been discussed in detail at a more technical level on http://www.s2ki.com and I found it pretty interesting. Try searching for it.

by the way downshifting probably saves more gas than putting it in neutral, injectors shut off when your off the gas and in gear still...

But when you're in neutral, you're also off the gas.
And when you downshift, you have to rev match, which means blipping the throttle pretty hard and quick using more gas. So....double

downshifting does not make that big a difference in gas usage unless your reving it high as fvck. I still prefer downshifting over putting it in neutral, makes things interesting, lol
